The no-win solution: Thai government a go-go

With the Thai election now more than 2 months in the rear-view mirror, there is still no PM, no government and no easy path to the finish line.

There are now only two stark outcomes facing the Thai electorate – both unpalatable and unworkable. Both will lead to more conflict and a destabilised political landscape.

As a preamble, the Move Forward Party, who won more primary votes than any other party, have proven to be both intransigent and unappetising to the army/conservative MPs and almost the entire Senate. So they’re, politically, dead in the water for now and are unlikely to be a part of conversations to form a new government.

Don’t underestimate Pita or his followers and coalitions.

I certainly won't be overestimating them, they've been in limbo since the election 2 months ago! The squabble for the trough is intense! It's an absolute disgrace!

They are very much in the game. It’s just a matter of changing one big issue, which can be dealt with later. Don’t underestimate Pita or his followers and coalitions.

Don't underestimate the continuing political power of the Senate and PTP.

You know Prayut Chan-o-cha is patting himself on the back.  Things are falling into place just as he planned....

Got to hate that man but got to also say what he did was a masterstoke with the appointed senators. The 5 years senates appointment fall nicely within the legal framework of the election and the leverage it has on the formation of the new government. Dismantling this evil legacy will be harder if PTP was to form a new coalition with the junta and ally parties. The only upside is that the next senators will be appointed by a new body and not by Prayut and his croonies.

Best plan is to call a new election asap. This time win by a landslide.

Some news agencies claim MF wants to scrap 112. Better start clarifying that is not the case.

But who's the body? IIt'll probably consist of military/royalist stooges and we'd be back to square one.

Fortunately they will have no say in a future prime minister unless the constitution is amended.

That will depend on the amendment. 2 necessary amendments. First the amendment on Senator Selection Committee and to change the Election Commission role in selecting the 200 senators. Since the National Council for Peace and Order has been dissolved, a new Selection Committee has to be appointed and royally endorsed. I think the EC's role can be an executive decision by the new PM. It is also paramount that MFP continue to support this amendments even if they are not part of the government.

It was hardly his personal idea...... I am sure the new Senators will be exactly the same, and i am sure they will find a way to allow them to vote again. Either that or they simply wont bother with elections again.
