Regarding the extendable E visa (not to be confused with e-Visa), when I go to the official Cambodian government website, I can apply for Visa T $36 (tourist only) or Visa E $42.

Is your post meant to imply that the Visa E above cannot be extended as a "retirement visa" because you apply for it online?

Apologies for any confusion but the evisa website you qoute is for the online application of a Cambodian e.visa (also known as an e-Visa/electronic visa). This was introduced in 2006 to specifically help boost tourism and one prints it onto paper (in fact 2 copies are needed, one to present on entry and the other to present on exit). Details of this e-visa are entered in your passport. This visa cannot be converted/extended into a Retirement (ER) visa.

The Ordinary E visa is an adhesive visa which is stuck into your passport by Immigration at point of entry. This can be converted/extended into an ER visa.

Photos to assist:

First - e.visa (online 42$) which you have to print onto paper and present at point of entry. This cannot be used for an ER visa.

Second - Ordinary E visa which is stuck into passport and can be used for ER visa if you are 55 years or older.

$30 (at point of entry)

My plan is to return to the USA every 2 years and re-apply. I would go back that often probably anyhow. It’s worth the flight for me to keep the money working, rather then sitting in a dead savings ac

Your information is outdated. It is now possible to apply for an ordinary visa (E-type visa) using the eVisa website. As a previous poster wrote correctly, the fee is $42. A tourist (T-type) eVisa costs $36.
