Alcohol advertising: Tightened restrictions urged amidst youth risk concerns

Further restrictions against alcohol advertising are being urged by the Alcohol Watch Network. Concerns centre around young people and new drinkers who are at risk due to various impacts on health, economy and society.

 

Teera Watcharapranee, director of the office of the Alcohol Watch Network, stated yesterday, that despite the responsibility of enforcing the law falling on the Ministry of Public Health under the Alcohol Control Act of 2008, the network and its allied sectors have publicly supported the cause, closely monitoring any acts of defiance related to alcohol advertising.

 

The network submits complaints about violations to the law enforcement officials responsible for enforcing the Act. It also highlights the regulation controlling sales and points of distribution, including prohibiting sales and consumption in civil service and religious places, restricting sales to individuals under the age of 20 according to Section 30, and forbidding promotion of sales such as discounted prices or promotions.

Young people learn about drinking alcohol primarily from older family and friends not advertising so restricting it further won't do anything to lessen youth drinking problems

Forbid things and everyone will do it.. It is in the Human Brain all over the world... How do other countries deal with acohol?? These draconian things as blurring in movies for example makes things worse... It is very annoying and not normal... But go to a market or fair and see how much advertising is there for beer brands everywhere... Stupidity..

Simple solution: just advertise soda water.

Young people are out on the lash every night.. no advertising needed.

I would more be concerned in the increasing amounts of people,  at every social level, indulging in drugs.

 

But obviously with the huge money it generates and who get's a bit cut on top of the food chain...no matter where in the world.... no chance !

Really, when people arrive at the legal age to drink, they don't look at the newspaper or Facebook to decide on the beer they want.

I'm pretty sure they're not waiting 'til they're 20 but your statement still holds true.

Wishful thinking; it does nothing to lessen drinking by young or old. Remember the hype for shorter sales hours for liquor; how'd that work out?

Beer drinking is 100% part of Thai custom/culture, they are brought up with it, the only restriction to youngsters is cash flow..........
