Questions: Can I buy in another province such as BKK and register it there… or take it to Samui to Register? Does it have to be done in the Province where my address is? (Possibly will purchase in Surat Thani city which is same province as Samui) What paperwork is needed? Immigration documents? Thanks!
August 25, 20232 yr Do those f%@x#'rs in the PCX shops not know the rules and be able to guide a buyer ? Guess their goal is only to sell and up to the buyer to handle all the bureaucratic harassment towards their foreign guests.

August 25, 20232 yr Last visit I bought a new ADV from an official Honda dealer on Phuket - I was on a TR60 visa and have a one-year apartment contract but needed a Residence Certificate - no big deal. It's still on a red plate as there is a +/- four month delay for registration. Not sure about the inter-province issue.
August 26, 20232 yr Popular Post I'm on Samui with non o retirement visa. I've had recent experience with registering (on Samui) three vehicles. 1. Big bike purchased & registered in Bangkok under Thai friend's name (as I was originally visa exempt short stay visitor) and shipped to Samui - transferred after a couple of years to my name and registered on Samui. Was advised by traffic dept. in Lipa Noi that I needed to go to Surat Thani provincial head office and requires two visits (application request/test and new plate collection). Instead I paid an agent at entrance to traffic dept. in Lipa Noi ThB 7,000 to complete all paperwork. 2. Car purchased from owner in Nakhon Thammarat - again Samui traffic dept. advised me to go to Surat Thani to complete transfer process, as it transpired that the car was registered by the owner in Bangkok. Instead I paid the same agent ThB 7,000 and waited two weeks to complete everything on Samui. 3. Scooter purchased from local shop on Samui. All paperwork handled by dealer (red plate, white plate, etc.) and included in purchase price. No need to visit traffic dept. My personal advice is buy local on Samui (new or secondhand) and if buying second hand ensure it's already registered to a Samui address. All you need to complete the registration is TM 30, residence certificate from immigration, house book, passport and a few passport type photos. And, if second hand privately then a visit to Lipa Noi traffic department. It seems anything purchased/registered outside of Samui requires either a trip to Surat Thani provincial head traffic dept. or use of an agent to facilitate the transfer. Travelling to Surat Thani, staying five days, etc. is going to be more expensive than using the agent!

August 26, 20232 yr You can buy from other provinces but the paperwork is a little more complicated. Dealers will do it for you but it doubles the price of your PCX/N-Max. It is best if you take a Thai with you for the buy and registration that knows the system. It took us about an hour to go through inspection and registration. You need to take the vehicle with you the first time. We had the full insurance already but it was easier to buy a second compulsory policy at the motor office for a few hundred baht.
August 26, 20232 yr find a good rental place and rent one. You can bargain for a lower price for longer time rentals. They repair, register etc IMHO

The main concern is that the Vid said that the shop will take your passport for up to two week to take to the licensing dept. and that is why I would rather do it myself. Seems that I need the residence certificate from immigration first which could take a bit of time. Is the motorbike insurance compulsory for the process? And yes I have been renting for twelve years, so better at this point to just buy. Cheers!

August 27, 20232 yr If you buy one from BKK; unlike in the past, now you need to get a new plate at the province where you stay. First visit to your local DLT is to notify the DLT at the seller's province to cancel the old registration, may take two weeks. Second visit is to have the vehicle inspected and get a new number plate. You will not get a new book. The new plate number will be noted on the front page of the old book which you will continue to use. In Thailand basic compulsory insurance stays with the vehicle. You only need to buy new por-ror-bor if it has expired.
August 28, 20232 yr Also the yearly tax expiration date stays the same, tho you will get a new tax sticker when you get the new plate. You'll need to buy por-ror-bor to pay yearly tax if it has expired. If I am not wrong transfer request fee is 5B, transfer fee is 100B, new plate 200B, stamp duty 500B per 100,000B car value. If you don't want to wait, you can goto seller's DLT to cancel the registration, which can be done right away. Then goto local DLT to transfer name, get new plate right away. This may not be a good idea if you have to drive the car home from the seller's province without valid registration. I did this and took my bike on my Revo to Isaan.

August 28, 20232 yr May I add...The new rule to have a new plate at the buyer's province only applies to farangs. Thais have the option to keep the old plate.
