The Memo: Judge scrambles election with decision on Trump trial date

The judge in former President Trump’s Jan. 6-related federal case landed a bombshell Monday when she set a date for his trial.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan announced jury selection in the trial would begin March 4 — the day before Super Tuesday, the biggest day on the GOP primary calendar.

 

 

In making her decision, Chutkan declared that a trial date “cannot and should not” depend on the timetable of a defendant’s work life.

Chutkan pushed the starting date later than sought by special counsel Jack Smith and his team, who wanted the trial to begin in January.

But her chosen spot on the calendar is a lot closer to Smith’s request than to the Trump team’s implausible suggestion that the trial should be postponed until 2026.

It is a remarkable choice, even if Chutkan professes indifference to the political ramifications of her decision. Around 14 states are expected to cast ballots in the GOP primary on Super Tuesday.

GOP figures allied with Trump are indignant.

“I was shocked that they would be this blatant,” said one Republican operative supportive of Trump. “On what basis does the trial absolutely need to start the day before Super Tuesday? Are we really supposed to believe that this is just coincidence — that she didn’t take anything about the politics into account?”

I wonder if she'd have a different opinion about working the trial around the defendants work commitments if the defendant was working for the BLM movement that she so loves to defend?

 

I'd imagine the judge in the OP will have the same expression on her face as she deals with Trump throughout the trial.

Clearly you don't know that the reason that the trial didn't take place much earlier is that Trump's legal team kept on filing frivolous motions which were repeatedly denied but were time consuming. And the ridiculous to delay the trial for 3 years is of a piece with that.

All you can offer is an empty and unproven right wing generalization in response to my specific explanation of why it has taken so long for the trial to be scheduled. It is laughable that you call yourself a "neutral" observer. In fact, the judge gave neither side what they asked for.

Ignoring your continued race baiting, it's not really the place of a judge to demean, degrade or belittle a defendant in a case.

Serves them right, a few days ago they mislead the judge in claiming they had to sift through 11.5 million pages of documents likening it to having to read 78 copies of War and Peace a day. In actual fact much of the documentation is duplicated and a lot already made public to them for months. The defense review also  produced many documents twice: once to show the original source from which the government obtained the document, and again in a separate witness folder if the document was used in interviewing a witness.

 

In actual fact the discovery in this case is somewhat like 78 copies of War and Peace, but not in the way the defense meant, after you read the first one, you don’t need to read the other 77.

 

In yesterdays hearing the defense counsel were getting ever more heated refusing to budge even one day in their proposed hearing date of April 2026 until the judge had to tell them to calm down.

 

"She gave the defense team several opportunities to come up with a more realistic proposed trial date. He refused to budge even one month or one day."

I don't think so. He's required to face a jury of his peers, but it's not a jury until all have been selected and sworn in.

Well, a deserved scolding is not the same as belittling, degrading, or demeaning. Trump may feel humiliated, but that's on him. The judge's warning to Trump was clearly legitimate. The judge is not responsible for Trump's feelings.

Courts do not adjust their schedules to suit traitors who are running for POTUS so they might avoid jail.

 

It's called Law and Order and ALL are equal under the law, both of which trump hates, as he hates democracy.

 

"Weaponization" of govt is when trump had the IRS audit both Andrew McCabe and James Comey.

 

Attempted Weaponization of govt is when trump tried to get the DoJ to open investigations into Hillary and to Biden. Weaponization is when trump ordered his AG to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the investigators (Durham) which turned up zero wrongdoing by CIA and only a single low level FBI employee, despite millions spent on Durham's boondoggle.

Well don't forget that trump has a big pile of "irrefutable evidence" that the election really was stolen, aka, the big lie,  that he was going to share last week that would completely "exonerate" him of all charges....and of course he and his crack lawyers know that all he has to do is present this massive trove of secret irrefutable evidence to the judge and all charges will be dropped along with a letter of apology and a fruit basket...  So having all this he should have zero concerns over the start date of the trial as he will be completly "exonerated" so problem solved.

 

The world anxiously awaits to see this evidence as it will be the first real evidence of voter fraud that anybody has been able to find in almost three years so obviously it will be HUGE evidence.

Excellent work, judge. His campaign should not be taken into account, on any level. He is a criminal, facing criminal charges. Hopefully he will be convicted, like any other felon, and be locked up. It could not happen soon enough. He has been working hard to earn this jail time, for nearly 50 years now, with his embezzlement, tax evasion, bank fraud, grifting, stealing from small contractors, stealing from his campaign supporters, etc. etc. Just lock him up already. He has spent his lifetime making a mockery of the judicial system. Perhaps that is about to change.
