Thailand’s new transport minister has given his backing to a proposal to build a new international airport in Phang Nga. Following PM Srettha Thavisin’s visit to Phuket and Phang Nga two weeks ago, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has revived the long-discussed Phang Nga Airport project.

According to a Bangkok Post report, the Airlines Association of Thailand is also in favour. AAT president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth says he plans to discuss the Phang Nga Airport proposal with the new transport minister.

The AAT represents Thai airlines, including Thai VietJet Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion Air, and Nok Air. Puttipong also serves as president of Bangkok Airways and said that his airline would be “keen on investing in the airport project”. Bangkok Airways already owns and operates airports in Koh Samui, Trat and Sukhothai.

We have all the time reports about new airports, and then we have reports about unused airports.

We can be pretty sure that building new airports will bring lots of "commissions" in the hands of politicians.

I suggest that airports in all those not so important places should be private investments. If those investments make sense, then it should be no problem to find private investors. And if they don't make sense, there are no investors, then probably they don't make much sense.

What you say is fine in theory.

Reality says that if the airport is successful, people complain about high prices. eg Koh Samui.

A private airport does not have the benefit of taxpayers to support it.
Private airports have to make money for dividends to the private investors who took the risk in the first place.
