Hit-and-Run Accident Leaves Three People Injured in Pattaya, One Seriously

Pattaya — A collision between a sedan and a motorcycle sidecar on Sukhumvit Road early on Thursday morning, September 14th, left three people injured, one of them seriously. The driver of the sedan fled the scene.

The incident occurred at about 1:30 AM on Sukhumvit-Pattaya 85 Road, inbound to Sattahip, Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi.

 

Rescue personnel and a medical team from Bangkok Pattaya Hospital were dispatched to the scene and found that a motorcycle sidecar had sustained significant damage.

 

Three people were injured, including an unidentified Burmese woman who had suffered serious head injuries and two other men, a Thai national named Mr. Opas Thupnamkham, 40, and another Burmese national Mr. Zaw Moe, 47. The latter two were slightly injured.

So the sedan driver doing a runner is justified because it is possible that the saleng had no lights?

Sometimes they ride against the traffic too, no lights in the sidecar 

Deadly at night as it leaves the sidecar invisible and protruding on the 'wrong' side.

'Police are investigating the incident and are attempting to identify the involved vehicle via a registration plate that fell off during the collision.' 

That might help even the Pattaya police's inept force.

Hit and run not okay even if the sidecar had no lights….no lights mean one contributed to not being seen…if one stops and says, didn’t see them until too late/collision, fault test with vehicle with no lights 

 

fleeing is a crime irrespective of who is responsible for accident

I would think that fleeing the scene would be because the perpetrator reckons he is wrong.

Section 4 (17) of the Road Traffic Act seems to suggest otherwise...

"(17) “Motorcycle” means a vehicle driven by engine, electricity or other power, having not more than two wheels; provided that there may be not more than one more wheel of a sidecar fixed..." thereon

And I agree, the motorbike sidecars are illegal and very dangerous for their occupants and those driving around them. I have almost hit them a few times. Only a third world country would allow them on the road. But this is Thailand.

Pedantic - 'fleeing the scene' is an extremely common occurrence in Thailand. 

In fact, when it's reported that after a serious accident its reported that that a driver didn't flee the scene, the response on the forum is usually one of surprise. 

 

People flee the scene for one of two main reasons. 

- They are fearful of immediate retribution from locals.

- They are drunk and don't want to be charged with DUI.
