Car legalities

I have a non O visa and Thai DL

For now.. Not knowing where I want to settle for a few more years... I want to buy a car in Pattaya and drive solo around Thailand... Maybe as much as 3 months in one spot .

I want my Thai friend to sell me her car...

If we don't change ownership to my name... Is the car insured for me to drive? Is the car insured or the driver insured in Thailand?

Any issues driving a car in Thailand that doesn't belong to me?

OR.... at any checkpoints along the way just say I'm renting the car?

Thanks for your help.

  • Name in blue book is the owner, how much do you trust this Thai friend ?

  • Assuming the car has voluntary insurance and the "any driver" box is ticked, then yes you will covered... assuming you have a licence.

  • No issue driving a car you do not own provided of course it is not stolen.

  • The car is your friends, why would you say you are renting it ?
