Not the time for a ceasefire in Gaza, says US, with Hamas still holding hostages

The US has said now is not the time for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as the UN reports that some Palestinians who fled their homes in the north of Gaza have returned due to a lack of food and shelter in the south.

On Monday, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told CNN that Israel still had “work to do to go after Hamas leadership”, echoing comments from the US president, Joe Biden, that any discussions of a ceasefire could only take place if Hamas freed all its hostages in Gaza.

 

The statement from the White House was at odds with comments from UN and EU officials who on Monday called for a humanitarian pause in fighting so that aid could be delivered into Gaza.

The director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza, Thomas White, told the BBC on Monday that a shortage of shelter, food and drinking water in the south had forced some residents to return to their homes in the north.

Israel delivered sweeping evacuation orders for almost half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people on 13 October. The UN estimates that almost two-thirds of Gaza’s population have been displaced over the last two weeks.

“People have left everything in the north … they’ve come to the south where they are struggling to find shelter, food is scarce, many people are having to drink unpotable water, so the situation in the south is dire,” White told the BBC.

It's somewhat ironic that Russia is now looking more reasonable than the US in the security council with the solitary US holdout against humanitarian relief for Gaza.

Did the Hamas call or ask for a ceasefire? Did it offer any reasonable terms? Why is it that you insist on rewarding terrorists? On not holding the Hamas regime responsible for its own actions? You seem perfectly able and willing to apply this concept in every other instance.

The question of how many Palestinians have to die can be answered by Hamas. IF they release all the hostages and turn themselves in to face justice, then the answer is zero. IF Hamas chooses to skulk and hide amongst the civilian population, then every death that happens is 100% the fault of Hamas.

 

A cease fire will not happen. The situation is beyond simply returning to status quo ante.   One way or another, Hamas will be eliminated.  THEN, perhaps a cease fire can be considered.

The casualty figures are courtesy of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. It is controlled by Hamas. In past instances, they were found to be inaccurate - with death toll counts differing between Hamas figures, UN assessments, and Israel's reports. I'm not denying death of children happened. I'm referring to the figure, and taking Hamas statements as is. Their statements after the hospital blast make for a good example.

I don't trust anyone's #s, least so anything Israel would state.

 

2000-1000-500 ... what's the acceptable # of innocent children killed for you?  Or how many more?

 

Just think, a simple agreed upon cease fire would put that number closer to something acceptable to me.

Thank god you don't work in industry; you don't understand that when there is a war the backlog contains countries not at war and the countries like Ukraine and Israel get prioritized. There won't be a backlog for Israel as there has not been for the Ukraine..

Think about this - Hamas went ahead with the 7/10 attack knowing the consequences. Nothing whatsoever done to protect its own civilians. Hamas members are either underground, in bunkers and tunnels the population got no access to. Some of the high ups are out of the country, staying in luxury hotels - and calling on their people to stay and face the bombs. "Sacrifices need to be made". Maybe the question is ought to be directed at them. Did they ask for a ceasefire? Did they release hostages? Stop rocket fire? If Hamas doesn't care about the lives of its own people and if Palestinian people keep supporting Hamas, should others do more?

 

There is no 'acceptable' number. People die in wars, children die in wars. If you can cite a war with zero kids hurt, that would be a start. In the real world, things are different.
