Not Liking Thai People

I no longer want to be around thai people.

 

I'm finding them annoying and just not enjoyable to interact with. They seem to be in a rush, stressed out, etc. Is it time for me to move?

They say that one attracts one's peers....no offence but we tend to attract people that are unconsciously like we may be.

To deal with your generalisation respectfully is difficult because its not a respectful generalisation, its not even remotely accurate of any generalisation of Thai people I've encountered or read, in fact quite the opposite is often generalised - that Thai's are too relaxed.

 

Thus, the issues are far more likely to be due to your immediate surroundings than any general national character. 

 

 

 

Having recently spent some time in a nation known for having difficult nationals I was ready to dummy spit and started tarring all with the same brush, yet, on occasion I was pleasantly surprised and didn't allow negative generalisations to impact decisions. Under the premise of the very nature of a generalisation, those negative generelastions were true of course, but they shouldn't tar every interaction..... 

Now I'm 'out' I can safely sit back in with the knowledge that my own racist bigotry isn't actually that at all, its just that some national traits are what they are and having developed 'fair opinions' based on rounded experience is just that.... experience.

 

So... what you are experiencing may not be due to where you are, but 'where' you are...  i.e. IF you are in the very centre of a hustle and bustle tourist hotspot, then visit a different area and re-set.

 

After too long in any area its nice for a reset to once again appreciate the good.

Probably not the best place to be if you don’t like the natives. Have a break. Personally prefer to be around Thais than people in my own country. Generally find them chilled and unstressed. Exact opposite to what you experience. Are you in one of those touristy places?

I just had a very disappointing experience with a compatriot today, making me wonder whether there's something bad in the water here...

 

No, seriously, (Thai) people are very annoying, but the way to deal with it seems to be to outright ignore them. I say these days that I'm not living here because of Thai people, but in spite of them. Many seem to have 'big problems', and knowing that I manage my life here much better than most of them gives me satisfaction every day...

It's funny, but I sometimes have the same though about my own countrymen here in my country, that I don't particularly like being around them.  I like my own space, but when I do chat with people it's more interesting to me if their life experience has been different from mine.  And I wonder how well or poorly I would have done had I been born in their environment.  It's also interesting to me how their environment has shaped their view of the world.

Start a meaningful thread. I haven't done it yet, so I'm grateful for those who start a thread on almost any topic.  Go back as far as you can on this board and read the old posts; they're not as stimulating as the old members remember them. 

 

Are the posters with negative feelings meeting Thais from the same social strata, or are they only surrounded by service industry or rural people?  It the latter is true, your interactions back home would be similar to what you have here, if anyone deigned to speak to you (beyond filling your order) in the first place.  

 

My minimal ability to speak and understand Thai are what limits my ability to converse with and understand the people here. I'm working on it though because the people are so friendly when I'm warm and open with them. 

 

I'm still in the honeymoon phase, and hope it lasts for as long as I remain here.

I've started more meaningful threads on this and its predecessor forum since 2007 than you've ever read on all forums combined throughout your entire life! I don't need to go back and read those old threads, I was there when they were written and wrote many of them myself. Plus, I've lived in Thailand full time for 22 years and part time for a further 11 and speak Thai. I can tell you with absolute certainty that threads such as this serve absolutely no useful purpose for the forum, the visitor, expat or Thai communities, it is designed solely to shock, gain attention, aggravate  and annoy. Some poor lost soul is having a difficulty coping with the local population so he posts his feeling here, boo ferkin hoo, man up and deal with it and take your heart off your sleeve.

So sorry to hear. Perhaps it might be time for a change. 

 

I love most Thai people, and love my life here. I have alot of respect and affection for most Thai people who I consider lovely souls. I actually find the difference between the way we perceive the universe, and the way the average Thai (and my wife!) does, to be amusing, and an endless source of fascination. And I love their lighthearted spirit and their playful nature.

Thank you. That was very well put very well articulated. I think alot of what we get back in life has alot to do with what we are putting out there. So the first thing to do is question thyself, the attitude you are bringing to the table, what you are projecting, and whether or not the kind of reaction that you're getting is in any way a reflection of any of that. 

 

I find most Thais to be very pleasant to be around.
