Just walk out the hospital when you feel better and fly home to get proper treatment. Tell em to stick the 400K!

legally he doesn’t have to pay a penny.

despite what anyone says, it is a hospitals duty to accept any and all emergency cases without question. Im not saying to walk out without paying is morally right, thats another story, but legally he doesn’t have to pay a cent.

Don't worry they'll have his passport, spouting your usual rubbish

I know someone who was diagnosed with Leukemia and prognosis to live maybe one year longer. She had no idea about this condition. The diagnosis happened at an unrelated event, not because of any complaints. And this was in a so called first world country.

This is my point, people don't wake up one day and call 911 to rush themselves into hospital for an emergency leukemia diagnosis - it creeps up on you in the background like many cancers, you only notice it when it's already been there for years.

The reason I mentioned this earlier is because I suspect the original story is full of lies and half truths and if he has leukemia then he should go and see a specialist when he's back home.

Then there's the issue of his holiday - how long was this guy on holiday for? 1 year? 6 Months? 1 week?

The British citizen’s dire situation is compounded by the absence of travel insurance, a decision that now haunts him and his friends. Urged by his friend, Page, to secure coverage before departure, Penson’s hesitation due to a pre-existing knee injury has left him facing astronomical medical bills.

Once again shows that don't travel anywhere without a proper travel insurance. It's a sad situation, but difficult to get sympathy for folks saving the normally quite affordable insurance cost and expect donations, is something goes wrong.

I wish the lad all the best, but I must say, this article raises more questions than answers.  Has he actually been tested for the presence of Leukemia? There are several different medical conditions that can lower a person's blood count. Examples include bleeding in the GI track, kidney disease, cancer, cirrhosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis to name a few.

Certainly a tough situation to be in and being in a government operated hospital is only making things more difficult. My thoughts and prayers goes out to him 🙏

I hope he covers I would like to point out that when you reach a certain age health / travel insurance is not available.

He's 42!   He could easily get single trip travel insurance for the next 30-odd years from a number of insurers!

You can not, just walk out of a hospital without paying

You can because a friend of mine did that very thing!

Nonsense.  Just because you claim that a friend of yours once did it doesn't mean that it is easily done by the rest of the population.

I hope he goes back to his home and stays there. And then he should tell all the people he knows how wonderful home is, includind decent hospitals and all that.

Nobody will miss him, and crybabies like him.

The travel insurance will cover some initial treatment for leukemia, if he didn't know anything about it before his holiday.

Then the travel insurance will send him back home so that he can get treatment back home.

Whats the got to do with you ralf?

It's a subject that you specifically brought up on a public forum, addressing it to everyone who reads it, and have reiterated it a number of times, so you have made it his (and everyone else's) business!

Why?

He could be grateful that the Thai hospital, and possibly the Thai taxpayers, help him with medical care.

Instead, he is complaining that the care is not as good as he wants it.

If he wants first class care, then he should pay for it. But it seems he doesn't even have 10k.

But it seems like GoFundMe works better because he already raised all the money and then some.

I was told that blood test is the main indicator of cancer. However, my mother's was normal four weeks prior to her death from metastatic disease. The readings only became abnormal at three weeks before death. No tumours visible on CT scan or endoscope. Tissue sample taken gave normal results upon analysis.

If a Thai has no insurance, it is wrong but no real surprise. If a traveling Caucasian arrives without travel insurance, then (s)he is an idiot.

In all fairness, the Thai healthcare system needs to look after its own people (first) and seems to do it - with questionable treatment and equally challenging qualifications of some of those medics.

The positive flip side of the coin though is, that Dr Thaksin's healthcare bill presently accumulating at the police hospital, where he spends his prison term, is paid for the Thai government. Latter, not having any money themselves, splurge on tax payers money.

Hope that clarifies the actual situation .......
