US House votes to authorise Biden impeachment inquiry

The US House of Representatives has voted to formalise its impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Lawmakers voted along party lines to back a resolution that Republicans say will give them more power to gather evidence and enforce legal demands.

Three Republican-led House committees allege bribery and corruption during Mr Biden's tenure as vice-president.

But they have yet to present evidence of wrongdoing, and Mr Biden says his opponents are "attacking me with lies".

The lower chamber of Congress, which Republicans control by a slim eight-seat margin, approved the inquiry on Wednesday afternoon by a vote of 221 to 212.

Voting to authorise an inquiry is not the same as voting for impeachment, but it advances the likelihood that the House will eventually seek to impeach Mr Biden.

In a statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the chamber "will not prejudge the investigation's outcome" but "the evidentiary record is impossible to ignore".

A formal impeachment investigation, that leads to a House vote and a Senate trial, could represent a major headache for the president in the midst of an election year.

But, even if the House ultimately opts to impeach the president, the Democrat-controlled Senate is all but certain to acquit him.

"The American people need their leaders in Congress to take action on important priorities for the nation and world," Mr Biden said in a statement following the vote.

The US political system is doomed and by extension so is the US

China will wipe the floor with us. Why?

You can not have one half of the country subotazing  the other half and hope to  survive.

So they want to go on a fishing trip and see if they can find any evidence. Banana republic behaviour if you ask me.

This is what happens when a political system is compromised and corrupt by inherent lobbyists and special interests.

I have to agree,

The most important and time consuming function an elected politician has is to raise enough  money and be re-elected.

IMO term limits is the only solution, but good luck having the foxes keep themselves out of the chicken coop.

Impeachment inquiry is formalized by the house vote earlier today and now the microscope will go up the Biden crime families orifices, especially now that House impeachment Inquiry will likely use former FBI forensic accountants to audit the Biden family bank account records, and trace the money trail through the labyrinth of shells, cut-outs and pass-throughs -- including foreign tax havens and overseas accounts. Biden and his crime family are in for a world of hurt I suspect strongly. There may even be an official impeachment proceeding with potential of increased  democratic support as more evidence is revealed. Biden needs to really suck up to Hunter now to keep Hunter from making a deal, testifying, destroying his dad criminally all to save his worthless crack head self. Bad day to be a Biden, so many have received payments and now will be yanked up to the House by way of formal congressional subpoenas, we're talking money laundering, tax evasion, corruption, FARA, they'll need good lawyers and a daddy to pardon them all.

Jim and Sarah Biden have an interesting history.

They should make a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel starring Don Jr and Hunter.

Consider the possibilities.

I think they are making fools of themselves, the only way they succeed is via the excrement machinery of right-wing media.

"Yes!  They indicted him to protect him! Classic rubric!"

Well let's face it, the Dems have been going after Trump for years so they shouldn't be too surprised when something comes back in their direction.

But I'd agree, such partisan politics ultimately does the US no favours.

So looking at the above, it would seem that although the GOP are wetting themselves in anticipation of a successful impeachment, there is a long way to go yet, and as it stands today "they have achieved a vote to authorise an enquiry, which is not the same as voting for impeachment". So they have the go ahead for a fishing expedition only!!!

How will this play out, nobody knows, apart from the fact that the rest of the world must be laughing at this charade and at the fact that there are still people supporting the habitual liar and Cockwomble, trump. What a mess US politics is in.

All good. Let the games commence.

With the Republicans in control of the house, especially with a religious zealot like Johnson holding the speaker's gavel, perhaps it's best that they aren't trying to make new laws.

Can you tell me the difference between what you allege about Biden's business practices (without any evidence) and Comer's actual shell company schemes?

So, anything in the U.S. Constitution that you disagree with is a fluke.  The Electoral College was established by the U.S. Constitution along with the rules that govern it.  There are also rules on how to amend the Constitution.  And there's a stool and an appropriate hat waiting for you.

What you and the poster you quoted reference are part of the reason enough Americans hate Washington enough to elect someone like Trump.

If Washington wasn't so bad, Trump would never have got past the primaries.

As I have little knowledge of the politics behind the US/ Ukraine connection, other than it's a pit of vipers, I am unable to respond to that.

Then why on Earth did you claim that the impeachment was a fishing trip if you had no clue?

Term limits are supposedly to prevent the establishment of a dynasty.

In Biden's case, it's like an Obama's third term, albeit a four year interlude.  The only thing missing are the speeches by the "great orator."

Given I know little Obama related, and less than little about his presidency, I'll have to take your word on that.

However, I did find it fascinating that so many ignored his 50% white ethnicity ( his mother was conspicuously absent from any news item I saw ) and that some of the people of Kenya apparently thought he was going to help them because his father was a Kenyan, despite his absence from his son's life after 3 years of age ( Wikipedia tells me he met Barack once at age 10 )
