So you did queue jump .

I would have refused the offer to queue jump and respectfully told him that I would wait in line and wait until its my turn .

All the serial Waiers can seen to be abusive online, is there any connection ?

Grovelling and being abusive, both sort of extremes

I do neither

All the ‘serial wai avoiders’ seem to draw daft hyperbolic exaggeration to justify their deliberate inability to be respectful….     pattern ???

Ignorance & disrespect - you seem to do both so well…

In any foreign culture, isn't is better to try and be polite than to fein complete ignorance ?....  Don't we, or a lot of our countrymen complain that 'visitors' (or immigrants as many of us are), do

I always say please and Thank you when necessary and a bow or a nod of the head when needed

Why am I ignorant and disrespectful ?

Bearing in mind that I always return a Wai , but never do it first .

The person whom I replied to stated that he deliberately Wai-ed the Chief immigration officer hoping to jump the queue , no exaggeration there

I get wai’d every day, often. And it’s reciprocated except to young children where it’s sort of a bad omen to do so. Anyway, no need to be a scowl, be nice and pond away…

Fair enough then - I got the impression that you refuse to Wai outright...  but if you are polite enough to return a Wai thats perfectly reasonable behavior IMO... although still a little odd at refusing to wai first if the situation so calls for it - Perhaps you are lot older (??) and there is less need for this compared to other posters.

No he didn't state that - your gaslighting stated that...  the person of whom you refer mentioned how he gave a wai to the immigration officer out of politeness, there was no preconceived notion of that this would lead to some form of advantage at the cost of others as you so commented in your attempt to score a point,

For anybody who's wondering. The correct time to wai an immigration officer is immediately he sets eyes on you. Other then that, I wai to Thai friends as soon as I see them as I notice they all do the same thing to me and each other, especially if the friend or acquaintance is older or they haven't met in a while. How you wai is irrelevant as long as you make some attempt. Thais will wai with their hands full, I have even seen a Thai make a scant wai while carrying a bowl of water.

I even wai to some expat farang friends and sometimes we will speak in Thai.

of course you do. i bet thai people laugh at it when you are not around.

From my Thai culture class that was/is/was a requirement for the teacher's license:

There are 3 "Wais" (with slight variations for special occasions, begging forgiveness, royalty, ceremonies, overbearing godlike school directors that will fire you )

Thumbs to your chin for friends, coworkers, casual encounters (on the street, local shops [not 7/11 or supermarket] work meetings)

Thumbs to your mouth for parents (includes in-laws and elderly family)

Thumbs to your forehead for monks.

The first is casual and is used about 80% of the time

The second is because parents gave you breath (life)

The third is because monks give you spiritual enlightenment

Kind of like in the Usa if someone offered a handshake and you just stood there

I wish the wai would replace the handshake everywhere. I dislike being made to feel obligated and touch someone else's contaminated flesh.

Why?

A little bow of the head is enough for me , no need to a full on Wei.

A smile and and nod of the head means equality , bowing down to you means they want something

I prefer we all bobble our heads side to side like in India.
