Airports of Thailand (AOT) will continue to expand the capacity of its existing airports and build two new airports, with an estimated investment of Bt150 billion, to cope with the increasing number of domestic and international passengers.

Speaking at a seminar called “Section II: Next Step” on Wednesday, AOT chief executive officer Kirati Kitmanawat said that the company plans to build the new Lanna and Andaman airports, which are estimated to cost Bt70 billion and Bt80 billion respectively. They will be capable of accommodating 40 million passengers annually.

The two projects are undergoing feasibility studies and the land expropriation process is expected to begin in the middle of next year.

Lamphun (Lanna) and Phang Nga (Andaman) - 40 million passengers annually?? :cheesy:

Even Phuket and Chiang Mai airports had just over 28 million passengers together(!) in 2019 (Phuket:18 million, Chiang Mai: 10.23 million), and Phuket's total capacity is 20 million passengers (Chiang Mai's is currently 8 million)... Will they pay people to fly to the new airports?

I won't be going to either of them, that's for sure.

20 million passengers each is still very optimistic in the future..

mind you it does say "capable" not will.

Lamphung is on a stone throw from Chiang Mai

(  a little depending on the location of Lanna Airport , north or south of Lamphung. Why to build a new airport at great cost soo close to an existing airport. (Compare this to Spain that build decedes back airports all over the country, most of them un-used after completion; waste of money!)

WHERE?

These people have never heard the old news axiom "who, what, when, where and why".

By the time these airports are operational, either CO2 reduction laws will have curtailed flying, or the planet will be on a one way trip to the next extinction event.

The trick will be to get the maximum number of people to visit, thus maximising revenue, before the pollution from their airplanes cause the country to become unlivable.
