Cricky Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 My daughter is turning 16 this month. She would like to buy a motorbike, showing me photos of different motorbikes, it scares me. I'd like to buy her a car. Can I register and insure the car in her name, she is only 16?

I have a foreign friend that owns two cars (blue books in his name), he does not have a Thai licence and his home licence expired years ago.
still kicking Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 The OP was worried about her driving a motorcycle and suggested to buy a car, OK? No point buying a car if you can't drive it 1

Btw...I hope the OP has very deep pockets Driving has become gnarly af in this country.

Bought my first Toyota from Pattaya Toyota back in 2004. My family has 3 cars at the moment, petrol, tax and CTP far cheaper than Australia.

BTW, can a Thai corporation have a Thai driving licence?

Once she's of legal age, she'll piss in the driving test, get herself a licence and who knows, by that time her boyfriend may stump up for a decent, new motor.

Some years back (6 or 7) one of my Thai staff wanted to buy a car, in her name, for her parents. She was in her mid 20s but did not have a DL. Once the dealer (I think it was Nissan, somewhere in Chumphon) found out she didn't have a DL, they wouldn't sell her the car. Go figure.

As others have said, she needs to be 18 to get a car DL and therefore be lnsurable. Anyway, since the insurance is based on the car, not the driver, better for you to register and insure in your name, but for 'all drivers'. Unless the insurance companies change the system, even if it gets totalled it won't affect your premiums for any other cars you own.

Totally false in Thailand, my wife owns our car but has never held a car license and has no intention of getting one. PM Note - She doesn't drive it either before anyone gets anty.

No. To drive the car a driving license is required and that can only be obtained at 18 years of age. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_driving_ages Vehicle Registration After purchasing a car, you must register it with the Department of Land Transport (DLT). It involves submitting the following documents: – Your identy doc – A copy of your driving license – Proof of ownership (the sales contract or car registration papers) – The car’s tax certificate – Car insurance papers The DLT will issue a car registration book, and you will receive two number plates for your car. 1
VocalNeal Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 I have a mate whose pickup is in his son's name and his son is now 11 having owned the pickup since he was 9. I also know an ethnic Burmese lady whose 9-year-old Thai son owns her house as she being a foreigner cannot own it. ( yes I know the house and the land can be split)

It should be "should she be allowed to drive at 16 in a country with an exceptionally bad driving record for deaths. Does a 16 year old have the maturity to handle driving in Thailand. The number of times I've faced death while driving in Thailand is not insignificant, and I'm a driver of many many years and the holder of almost every licence it is possible to have ( only missing ambulance ). IMO only luck and experience saved me and those with me. 1 1
