Getting From Chiang Mai To Vientiane

Featured Replies

I was wondering what you think the best way to get from Chiang Mai to the Thai embassy Vientiane is? The cheapest way is probably by bus but which one and do you know how long it will take? Are there any cheap flights going straight from Chiang Mai to Ventiane?

Thanks!!

There are listings in TV for this:

great, thanks!!

Yes direct flights between CM and Vientiane ... stopping over in Luang Prabang for an hour (or you can get off and stay awhile).

thanks for the advice. I ended up finding a flight to Kuala Lumpur so I decided to go there instead. If i need another tourist visa in a couple of months though, it'll be Vientiane.

KL is great. If you're after a camera, it's the ideal place.

The fastest way at this point in time to get to Vientiane from Chiang Mai is:

Flight - Nokair

From Chiang Mai to Udon Thani - typically around 2,000 baht each way if booked in advance 2 weeks (normally) Sometimes specials for 500-800 baht.

From Udon Thani Airport there will be plenty of mini vans willing you take you for 150-200 baht to the border; however you will have to wait for more passengers, which normally doesn't take longer than 30 minutes. After which time, the ride takes approximately 1 hr, assuming the additional passengers are not dropped off in other places.

From the border, it's about 15 minutes and 100 baht (I think) to Vientiane.

Reverse the process and there you go.

This process to and from takes about 5 hours total.

If getting 2 month multiple reentry visa, you need to wait 1 day + 2000 baht for visa. Hotel cost you about 500-700 baht.

If you take a bus, you're looking at about 26+ hours and will cost you about 850baht (each way) for the bus ticket.

I never understand why people ask simple questions and everyone does everything but answer the question.
