Quickly ran out of money. And the result for her might be better than to still be amongst her family. I would buy her a meal. Just the way I am, the way I think, just the way that I find to pay it forward, because I do find that, unlike her, I ended up having some luck. And I will give for that sole reason, thinking that I was one of the lucky ones. Just have enough because of a regular pension, and enough to share. Wishing that when I die, these are the thoughts that will come to my mind. The thought of having given, and having in return, many 'smiles'. Enough for me.... Thank you for your kind post. If I want to give a plate of food to someone it is my action nothing more. Can the ones who complain/comment about it not look at their own behaviour/attitude before saying something. Until now, from what I have seen, people have not pointed at the vendor's kindness, have they?? Comments were rather targeted towards the girl.

Captain woke has spoken, anyone who does not give to anyone that asks is a hard hearted uncompassionate, selfish demon. The ones that are conned we call mugs. I don't care about beg packers, illegal immigrants, scam artists, overstayers or kiddie fiddlers, they all deserve the boot. Popular Post Geordieabroad
I don't think it's got anything to do with backpackers. It's about being a decent human being. Have the Thais forgotten about Farang businesses in Thailand donating free meals to hungry Thais during covid and the many millions of baht which were raised by farangs in Thailand to help the needy? 1 4

Popular Post spidermike007
It sure doesn't take much to spark a debate these days, it seems many have too much time on their hands and just enjoy bickering about something. 1
Popular Post renaissanc
So much ignorance is being shown here and on Thai social media about this incident. I used to backpack a lot in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then it was much more difficult than nowadays if you had a problem. There were times when things beyond my control happened and I had little or no money for a (short) while. So many people helped me with kindness in different ways during my 13-month journey around the Caribbean, South, and Central America, for example. I typed out my diary about this particular journey about 6 months ago and I recalled what happened. Sometimes backpackers need help. I'd have helped this woman out if I had been in the restaurant because I know about (budget) backpacking. I hope that you will show some compassion if you meet a backpacker in need of a meal or two. 1 1

Popular Post michaellee
Disgusting. You come from a western country. You have the money to fly over here and travel all over the place and you dont have $2 to spare on the food. What a low life taking advantage of the Thai people. Will never give anything to these loser. 1 2 1 1

If being a woke means being kindhearted and helping others worse off than me, then I am proud to be a woke. I wonder what it really means. If you think that being conned makes you a mug, then please explain who was being conned out of what here. I don't see anybody being conned. I do see somebody giving an act of kindness to another human being. Perhaps that is where we differ. 1 1

As if some compassion and generosity is somehow wrong depending on who and where it is. I’ve seen lots of criticism of backpackers on this forum, most of it from old men who are simply jealous of youth and the carefree spirit that comes with it. I spent six months backpacking through Europe with a friend in the early 1980s, and we often received favors from strangers; it was all good; I would encourage any young person with a bit of time and curiosity to just head out. The Thai food vendor giving a free meal to a farang is a small demonstration of international amity, which is sadly lacking among “adults” throughout much of the world. Plus, young people who have a good experience traveling in Thailand on a budget are likely to return later in life when they have more money to spend. People who find fault with this are just cantankerous old fools as far as I’m concerned. 1 1 2

I have been conned once, shame on me. This guy was very good. He stole my Face book account and even diverted 2 or 3 of email accounts of my friends. It took me 5 months to find him out. He wasn't that smart though because he tried it again a year later using the same name and account. He was himself, 2 of my friends, his boss, he was also a famous lawyer in the USA. What tripped him up was when he became a female FBI agent and gave me her email address as well. Unluckily for him I spoke to some real FBI agents at the US embassy in Bangkok and they gave me some useful information. Other than that he was very very good. Popular Post HauptmannUK
Not too many years ago my youngest daughter had to beg for food when backpacking in the USA. She was attacked and robbed of money, phone etc whilst in Seattle. She went to the police but they weren't interested in helping and even declined to make a phonecall on her behalf. After a day spent in some distress she went into a fastfood restaurant where one of the staff gave her a meal and let her use a phone to make calls and send some emails. She's not a loser - now a doctor in a UK hospital. 2 1 1

Korat Kiwi
Very nice of the street vendor and I wonder if anything was edited from the video. Normally (Well at least from my perspective) I would have thought the backpacker would at least offer to clean up / do the dishes or offer some sort of help for the free meal. Only those that were there will know. But then maybe the immigration people will be hunting you for working without a visa... Can't win either way. 1
