Please identify (1,2,3,4,5 - lots of legs))

Featured Replies

I have these small things crawling over my porch and I assume they are in my lawn.  They are very tiny and about 1cm long. Anyone can identify, tell me if they are harmful, and if that is the case how to get rid of them?

Edited the topic heading for more clarity.

1 pair of legs per segment is some kind of centipede, many if not all are carnivores.

At 1cm they're not going to worry you, but they can get BIG!

Get some sort of creature to eat them (chooks or guinea fowl), or a can of Raid!

Thanks for the edit, looks to me as 4 legs per segment (2 each side)

Yeah, you may be right. That would make him a millipede and vegetarian, harmless unless you are a vegetable.

If you poke them, do they roll up??

Either way, same solutions :whistling:

No they don't roll up. The kind that rolls up I had last year,

The difference with these is that they are white underneath.

Vegetarians mean they will eat the roots of my grass?

Perhaps a Yellow Dragon millipede (Orthomopha communis):

No idea, you could try posting in the Facebore group "Thai Biodiversity Survey & Species ID".

If you don't use Facebook I'll post for you, need to know where in Thailand you saw them.

Thanks for that, I will add a picture from the underside, so you have more details to post.

Location is banglamung - chonburi.

I only touched with my finger to turn it upside down, and it went lifeless,

@Sophon Yellow dragon is a good guess

Yeah, I reckon he's a Yellow Dragon too, let's see what the group says.

I've asked about eco-friendly control measures too (they really don't like cans of Raid!).

While we wait the "1,2,3,4 - lots of legs" is from The Trapdoor a UK kids Claymation.

Brilliant stuff, could they make it today or too scary??

At about 2mins 50!

At 1cm a piece I think you might need rather a lot!

My Korean ex loved "bundaegi" (steamed silkworm larvae), they smelled awful when cooking and tasted worse!! She would munch a pot of them and then want to smooch!! :whistling:

Did I mention she's my ex??

I just did a google for yellow dragon and yes they are poisonous, but they are much larger as what I see.

If that are babies, then i'm gonna have a problem, since there are lots of them

Dtakab is a centipede and a very different animal

Centipedes are venomous and very quick and aggressive, while millipedes are poisonous (so don't eat them), generally slow and passive.

I'd just spray them with Baygon anyway if they were over my porch crawling around.

I was curious so I asked my resident

expert , who reportedly claims to know everything!
 That was her answer.
Your picture and the Op’s dont look the same !

Correct me if Im wrong but there are many centipede & Millipede species  .

I wouldn’t be surprised if Thais give them all the same name.

Hi, any update from the FB page on the creatures crawling around here ?

Rather less helpful than usual, but the general opinion is they won't harm you or your grass.

Sweep them up and out (or use Raid on them), the local wildlife will munch up the vast majority of the beasties.
