Since Putin came to power, he has repeatedly stated his desire to see the Soviet Union restored.

IIRC, the Gorbachev agreement of 1991 guaranteed the sovereignty of Ukraine, in return for surrendering its nuclear arsenal.

Putin trashed that agreement when he illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. That was when other countries really started signing up to NATO.

He then put the icing on the cake in 2022. Sweden and Finland joined up. Finland joining effectively doubled the border Russia has to defend in the West. Brilliant thinking by Putin.

Dictators get told what they want to hear. I'm quite sure Putin was told Ukraine would be a cakewalk, and NATO was weak and divided. It was a massive intelligence failure, in a country that prides itself for its skills in that area.

Russia is enormously wealthy, in land mass and resources. Trying for even more in Ukraine is simply kleptomania.

The image you posted - reminds me of a guy at work we called No-Toes. Could be Putin too.

You’re completely ignoring the most important factor: What do the Ukrainians themselves want? They have been able to travel to Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, where they see rapid gains in quality of life and personal freedom since the fall of communism. They can also travel to Russia, where they see a new descent into authoritarianism. They would be nuts not to want what the Poles and Czechs have gained.

 

Sure, Eisenhower was quite right to warn about the military industrial complex; he was in a position to know. And the pure greed of “disaster capitalism” as described by Naomi Klein, and of neoliberal capitalism more generally. And nobody in the West (other than, I’m sure, a few crackpots) was proposing marching on Moscow; there was no threat. That was the whole point of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program established in the 1990s, to build mutual trust. Many original PfP members joined NATO, but many still haven’t.

 

We wouldn’t have this conflict if Putin hadn’t marched his armies into Ukraine.

The US didn't seek to expand NATO.  Neither did any other NATO nation.  NATO doesn't seek to expand.  Countries that are threatened by Russia seek to join NATO.

There was no formal agreement, and there is no Soviet Union any more (because it has been torpedoed by Russian in June 1991).

I guess if you ask Poland or the Baltic States, they would tell you that adhering to NATO has protected them from a conflict with Russia

According to the article, Ukraine has lost 500,000 soldiers. Western intelligence estimates the Russians have lost 300,000 troops, despite being on the offensive, with lousy logistics, poorly trained and motivated troops, used in human wave attacks.

Neither does the claim Russia is assembling a coalition of unaligned countries.

If one looks at the description of the author's background, it would seem he has a bias towards Russia. Quoting Shoigu is a dead giveaway, the guy could not lie straight in bed.

The numbers don't add up. If they were true, Kiev would have fallen already.
