Accident Lorry Crash Injures Worshippers in Van Collision on Asian Highway

A group of worshippers travelling from Bangkok to Chai Nat were injured when their van was struck and crushed by an out-of-control lorry on the Asian Highway in Sing Buri province on 6 Jury. The crash occurred at kilometre marker 83+500 in Muang district, when a silver passenger van carrying nine women, mostly elderly vendors from Bangkok’s Bang Bon district, was travelling in the far-right lane. According to the van driver, 58-year-old Mr Sangsarn, the lorry veered sharply from the far-left lane and collided with the van, crushing it against a roadside barrier. “I was driving in the right lane when the lorry suddenly swerved into us from the left,” Mr Sangsarn said. “I tried to brake, but it was too late. The trailer hit us hard and pinned us to the guardrail.” Five passengers were injured in the collision, with some reportedly thrown from the vehicle and others trapped inside. Emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation worked swiftly to extract the victims and rushed them to Sing Buri Hospital. The lorry, which was transporting cassava flour to Nakhon Sawan, was driven by 37-year-old Mr Tosawat. He claimed a mechanical failure was to blame. “The left front leaf spring broke, and I couldn’t control the vehicle,” Mr Tosawat said. “I was planning to get it repaired in Nakhon Sawan, but the accident happened before I got there.” Police from Sing Buri’s Muang Station have took Mr Tosawat in for further questioning and are collecting evidence to determine legal responsibility. Police in Songkhla have taken a male suspect into custody in connection with the arson attack on the car of Mr Sirichok Sopha, a former multi-term Democrat Party MP for Songkhla. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime, though investigators say he remains evasive about the motive. The incident occurred in the early hours of 5 July, when Mr Sirichok’s vehicle was set ablaze and destroyed outside his home in Na Thawi District. Initial concerns suggested the fire may have been politically motivated, particularly following Mr Sirichok’s recent public criticism of a local politician. In a comment seen by some as provocative, he remarked: “The longer he remains in Na Thawi, the less the district develops.” Investigators believe this may have incited retaliation. Police reviewed CCTV footage from around Mr Sirichok’s residence and identified suspicious movements near the scene. Acting on this information, officers from Na Thawi Police Station detained a man at his residence in Moo 9, Chang Subdistrict. Under interrogation, the man admitted to starting the fire but provided unclear and contradictory explanations about his reasoning. Authorities continue to explore whether he acted alone or under instructions. Pol. Col. Nisit Saleh, superintendent of Na Thawi Police Station, confirmed that the arrest followed intensive efforts by the investigative unit, which was ordered to analyse surveillance footage and track any leads pointing to the identity and movements of potential suspects. While further details about the suspect have not been released, the case is being treated as a serious criminal offence with possible political undertones. The Democrat Party has expressed concern over the use of intimidation against its members and has called for a full and transparent investigation.
