Why does cataract surgery require a hospital stay in Thailand?

From the time of the initial consultation to the day of the surgery was 5 weeks - cost was approx 30000 baht for multi focal lens which corrected both the vision and the presbyopia. This is the Dr who performed the surgery -

A colleague had his done in the U.K., it was a production line he said, nurses administrating drops, as soon as 1 went patient came out more or less another one went in, waited 20 minutes after the op then home, back in a month for a check up.

You make no sense. Insurance Co's do cover day surgery as it is cheaper than keeping someone overnight when the proceedure does not require it.

Not taking sides but insurance is sold ala carte Inpatient Outpatient which might mean if the person has Inpatient technical procedure might not be covered.

Do you mean lens replacement surgery for cataracts ?

I had both eyes done with new multifocal lens's (sp?) at BKK Pattaya.

If only getting one eye done at a time was told no overnight stay, if do both at same time then overnight stay.

I opted for both at same time due to having to return to work, they did first eye, waited 10 minutes to confirm I could see ok from that eye then did the second eye.

Surgeon and staff were all excellent, now fully sighted again and hopefully never need glasses again, more than happy with the outcome.

Why would they inject in your eye, I had both eyes done recently, a series of drops to freeze my eye which took longer than the procedure. No ill effects after op, in and out in a couple of hours, Pattaya Jomtien for both eyes including medication and follow up checks.

Cost please thanks

1 eye at Rutnin THB140,000 (ish) and 1 eye at Samitivej THB75,000

One eye at a private hospital in Kalasin 25,000 (I'm having both done, probably a month apart). Room 1700 includes free meal and dark glasses,

Be aware that one eye can mean entirely different procedures/lens so there can be a big difference even at same hospital.  Single focus lens (safest choice but probably require reading glasses) can be a lot less expensive than the multi focus lens.

Just simple reading glasses is something I'm looking forward to, after I wasted 20,000 on new progressive glasses that had no impact at all, hence my trip to a hospital for a proper test and not the useless test at Thailand's Top glasses chain. I get the impression from an earlier thread that they would come in at well under 5000.

You can get good reading glasses at Lotus or such for 200 baht or so (test before buy) - also on Lazada if you know what you need (although not much lost if buy several to find out).

That's what my wife uses, those from Lotus or Big C. Great that I'll likely be able to do the same. Maybe I can even borrow one of her many pairs for reading ....

Mine were both single focus lenses.

My wife can administer the drops and does the driving, so,,,, we'll see what unfolds. See my post above.

In my case hubby did the eye drops for me. No need to pay for hospital bed.

140K at Rutnin? This is steep.

Rather go to Bumrungrad for this price. I paid 63K @ Medpark last year.

The bed is only 1700 for a single use room so no big deal. And returning to the hospital for a check the following day is a 100km round-trip that can be combined with shopping and is also no big deal. What will probably swing me away from the hospital stay is the memory of a rock hard bed when I needed to stay there years ago (I ended up sleeping on the couch as it was softer), and being bored there.
