Snake catcher from Melbourne Australia in critical condition following a tiger snake bite

Featured Replies

A prominent snake catcher is fighting for life in hospital after being bitten by a tiger snake in Melbourne over the weekend.
Mark Pelley, commonly known as The Snake Hunter, was bitten on his hand after his equipment broke while catching the snake on Sunday morning.
His condition started deteriorating almost immediately, according to his daughter, Aishah Pelley.

The snake catcher was rushed to hospital and remains in the intensive care ward.
Ms Pelley said her father's pupils dilated to nine millimetres and he suffered haemorrhaging.
"The venom went straight into his circulation system from a deep bite and started to have neurological effects immediately," she said on social media.
"I watched him lose consciousness very fast in front of my eyes. Craig and I both thought we watched him die.
"He couldn't talk, (or) breathe properly and the hospital asked me to discuss him possibly go on ventilation."

I originally thought tiger snakes would put you in hospital and make you extremely sick but I didn't realize just how deadly they can be ....... we used to go looking for them around Winton as teens .....

The joy of being young, glad I am from the UK and avoided such fun.

I read that tiger snakes account for 15% to 20% of all snakebites in Australia but with only a few deaths recorded yearly. It says that tiger snakes are highly venomous and are dangerous to humans, but the antivernom is very effective.

No tiger snakes in Thailand, but still a few dangerous ones.

Yes, hope he recovers.

Reports say he remains weak and has suffered from muscle and nerve damage and heart irregularities.

The bite looks so small.

A 47-year-old man's wife desperately tried to save him after he was bitten by an eastern brown snake while trying to remove it from a childcare centre near Townsville.
Jeremy Brookes, a father, husband and grandfather, died yesterday afternoon after he was bitten three times on the arm by the venomous snake.
Brookes was not a licensed snake catcher but was called by a relative and asked to help remove the snake from the grounds of a childcare centre.

Never good to hear of any death, but seems that the current average is about 2 or 3 fatalities a year from snake bites, which makes any death not only rare, but also sadder to hear.

Previous reported death from last year.

Darling Downs man Roger Taylor has died in a Brisbane hospital a little over a week after being bitten multiple times by a brown snake on his Vale View property, south-west of Toowoomba.

His wife Carol Taylor, the Toowoomba Regional Council Deputy Mayor, confirmed her husband died this morning.

Councillor Taylor said he died peacefully surrounded by family in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Again a sad story,RIP, but highlights the need to seek the appropriate treatment, as soon as possible if you are bitten.

Only 1 of the 3 reported deaths that year.

Q. What is the worst thing about being better by a poisonous snake?

A. You are probably Australian.
