Bangkok Port relocation set to combat pollution and congestion

The Bangkok Port, a 32-rai facility located next to the Chao Phraya River in the Klong Toey district, is slated for relocation as per government orders. The decision aims to repurpose the area for public advantage.

 

The directive was communicated through a letter issued by Thawatchai Chanpaisansil, adviser to the Cabinet Secretariat, on April 4 to the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Interior, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT). This letter outlined the Cabinet’s resolution from their prior Tuesday meeting to move Bangkok Port out of the capital city.

 

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, in an April 2 Cabinet meeting, had proposed this relocation, emphasizing the potential benefits it could bring to Klong Toey residents and the wider Bangkok populace. This move is anticipated to alleviate the dust pollution generated by freight trucks that frequent Bangkok Port.

The Cabinet has tasked the Ministry of Transport to collaborate with the PAT and relevant agencies to expedite the relocation’s feasibility study. This directive also includes the transfer of all amenities, such as depots and oil storage facilities.

The Ministry of Transport, PAT, BMA, and other concerned agencies are expected to draft a post-relocation development plan to tackle prevalent issues like slum community problems, traffic congestion, and dust pollution, the source revealed.

 

“The prime minister is keen on elevating the living standards of the Klong Toey community and is resolute about eliminating the pollution and congestion issues caused by the port’s presence in inner Bangkok.”

 

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt had earlier proposed this relocation during a meeting with the prime minister at City Hall in February. The 62 year old Bangkok-born premier, recognising the urgency, agreed to study the matter.

 

The BMA aims to shift the Bangkok Port to the Laem Chabang deep-sea port in Chon Buri, with a vision to reduce air pollution and transform the vacated area into a green space for city-dwellers, reported Bangkok Post.

The Bangkok Port, located in the bustling Klong Toey district, is earmarked for a potential relocation, the Transport Ministry announced. Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri revealed plans for a feasibility study into the port’s relocation yesterday, to transform parts of the 32-rai site into a public park.

 

Manaporn, responsible for overseeing the operations of the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), shared that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had proposed during an April 2 Cabinet meeting, a partial relocation of Klong Toey port to the Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri. The 62 year old prime minister’s order will be followed with the formation of a dedicated committee to examine the plan further.

 

This relocation is complex, with multiple factors to consider, including existing lease agreements and employment contracts, Charoensri noted, referencing an initial survey conducted by the PAT.

She reassured of the impact on industrial factories and oil refineries, stating that not the entire port would be shifted. Instead, the Bangkok-born PM has proposed methods to make optimal use of leftover space or areas currently misused by the community, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity. Some of this space, she indicated, might be redeveloped into a public park.

Manaporn elaborated that the move to Laem Chabang Port could be beneficial from a developmental perspective. Due to the limitations of the Bangkok Port being non-deep-sea, a partial move to the deeper Laem Chabang would be more practical. PM Srettha further suggested exploring the possibility of transforming the port into a tourism hotspot.

 

In line with this potential new direction, the PAT’s Director-General, Kriangkrai Chaisiriwongsuk, revealed that the port’s master development plan aims to elevate it to a green port. The intention is to enhance the quality of life for surrounding communities and residents while evolving the port into a tourist pier, complete with comprehensive logistics transportation services, reported Bangkok Post.

Whatever they build, I hope they create some higher ground for when Bangkok is underwater from sea level rise and/or subsidence.

 

If they start 5 years ago, they may beat the rising tide...

 

It does seem a waste of a prime central location to have such dirty industry and heavy truck traffic. Probably worked well when Bangkok was 1/4 of its current population.

 

Betcha the poor residents of Khlong Toey end up SOL, whatever they decide.

There was a master plan since more than 7-8 years ago where Port Authority has wanted to move the port so the land can be leased out to generate more profit, there was a few plots of underused land.

 

There was talks of another mall, park, and condos for the area. As it’s by the river and a stones throw away from city center, it actually prime location land if they can get the project moving.

Has anyone considered that the inhabitants of Klong Toey are employed in the port?

 

Now here is an absolutely groundbreaking idea. Spend a fraction of this money ( probably less than the brown envelopes for redevelopment) on providing them with decent living conditions, and get a grip on the pollution.

He is a real estate developer Such a project will likely take 20+ years to come to fruition (profit). He has no time to waste.
