How do you deal with soi dogs ?

Featured Replies

Any recommendations for dealing with an angry soi dog ?

Just got my jeans ripped apart by one near a remote temple in the Hua Hin area.

My leg is fine (just a couple of bruises) but that's really just luck.

So how do you deal with this usually ?

Marinating in Soy Sauce really covers up the gamey taste.

Not easy with an aggressive soi dog, don't turn your back to it, back away slowly, ideally use a stick or something from the ground. Carry a telescopic batten in a waist bag works for me if I'm walking in a soi dog zone such as through the woods at Pratumnak and Bali Hai

That's actually an extremely good idea.

I'm gonna have a look on Lazada.

Thanks

Not a good idea at all. Thais see you whacking dogs with metal pipes and you're a black-hearted foreigner, Thais will love the soi dog more than you, and will probably come and whack you, or call the cops.

Air pellet pistol, using the PLASTIC and not metal pellets. No real harm and it's more the sound that scares them that does the trick.

EVERY time I've used my air gun to deter those nasty vermin and am witnessed by locals, they CHEER.

That's where i bought mine, it's better than carrying a stick which makes you more aggressive and the dogs get nervous, even more likely to cause trouble

No problem. If I have no choice, I rather fight a man than a dog.

You should have seen the one that attacked me. A beast.

Feeders will say something like that. If a dog is attacking you all bets are off, if something like a pitbull it would need to be killed

Is it actually legal for foreigners to carry a collapsible baton, though?

Capsicum spray... Not sure where you can buy that legally.

Or make up your own with chilli peppers.  Basically put chillies in a pot with some water.  Slow boil so the chilli oil infuses into the water but not do much that it's a thick soup.

Cool/strain the liquid and put into a spray bottle or water pistol. It's got to be able to shoot a stream not a mist.  Back in NZ we use to be able to get small palm sized water pistols,  very good for concealment and not awkward to lug about.

A shot from that into a dogs face will see them back off quick smart. Stings like heck in your eyes too... Be careful!

Throw a rock at it, and like someone said don't turn your back to it or move towards it, just stand there and keep throwing things. Back away slowly facing the dog until you are out of it's territory. That's a barking dog. A loud dog is not a very dangerous dog.

If it's a vicious attack then you place your hands behind you, like you are handcuffed, and kick with your legs and feet. Let it come to you, don't chase it or attack. Don't let it bite your arms and hands. If you had long pants on, and hopefully closed toe shoes and not beach sandals, you are very lucky. Much easier then wearing shorts and they can smell fear from a bare leg.

Don't care but that's one reason why it's in a waist band. You'd probably rather be bitten?

sure no blood? if so you'll need rabies and tetanus shots

Walking around Thailand brandishing a gun -- even a plastic pellet shooting replica -- at soi dogs is downright idiotic.

I don't think so.

The dog didn't touch me directly.

I have bruises due to the jaw's pressure but the teeth didn't went through.

The a-hole just destroyed my pants by pulling on them...

That second sentence was pretty unnecessary.  Please try to be polite in the future.

I would rather know when I am doing something illegal and it's probably worth mentioning, even if you don't personally care.  Especially when there might be alternatives that are perfectly legal.

I would like to deal with them with excessive and gratuitous violence... but I can never catch the little wretches..

I got my "arms" at China Town: telescopic stick, knife, Rambo: First Blood machete, nunchakus' and pepper spray.

I had one dog constantly coming after me while riding my bike, going right for my foot/ankles....I got a spray bottle that could shoot about 9ft....I then made a concentration of Apple Cider Vinegar with some light salt water.....After the first attempt & me spraying it's eyes it decided to avoid me....This dog basically attacks anything when he escapes his fenced yard.....

The locals carry a 2.5-3ft sturdy bamboo stick which seems effective.....

When initially finding places to walk my dog, I did too; tucked into my belt running up through the small of my back like an arrow in a quiver....I didn't carry a baton as that could possibly be construed as a weapon....

If this works as shown on the promo video, it might be a good answer.....

Permanently wear this outfit whenever you leave the house. I can guarantee they will be more scared of you than you are of them.

They are much more likely to be smelling my fear from what has been deposited in the back of my shorts rather than from my bare leg....
