A woman who sells durians roadside in Chumphon province might end up in prison for up to 7 years and fined 280,000 baht for tricking her customers with a rigged scale.

The situation came to the attention of authorities when a customer bought two durians that allegedly weighed 16 kg, for a price of 1,640 baht. However, while sending the durians to their mother, the customer noticed the actual weight was just 11.68 kg. This led them to report the seller to the Department of Internal Trade.

Undercover officers from the department, acting on the complaint, visited the stall and saw the seller using a doctored digital scale. The weight display and the unit price were hidden behind black tape, only showing the total price. This trick misled the customers into thinking they were being charged for the correct weight.

Further investigation showed that the seller broke several rules of the Weights and Measures Act. These violations included: use of a non-certified scale, a scale that showed wrong readings and tampering with a scale. On top of these, she was charged with fraud under Article 271 of the Criminal Code. This crime has a maximum punishment of 7 years in jail and a fine of 280,000 baht.

100 Baht/kilogram seems very cheap, but maybe there is a lot of wastage with whole fruit?

I used to think that too but now I rate it as one of the best fruits out there. The only pitfall, I'm told, is the high cholesterol.

Remind me again what Thaksin got?

Why I'm not surprised 😂.

Go to any market and check the scales🤣

It is also dangerous to drink alcohol and eat durian as it can ferment in your stomach so I've been told. I'll stick with beer thanks. :coffee1:

Many sellers still use this outdated type of scales, because it allows them to give a guess at pricing.

Always a rounded number.

Lots of work there for controls of seller prices...

Lots of games using scales here.  My fruit seller's scale starts at 0.20 kg. When I called her on it she quit speaking English language.  The squirly smile disappeared too.
