French Expat Rescues Two Men from Drowning in Lopburi

Tragedy struck in Lopburi as a camping trip turned deadly for a group of friends, but quick action by a French expatriate saved two lives.

 

On June 1st, 2024, Khok Tum police received an emergency call about three individuals drowning at the Bott Camping Ground in Mueang, Lopburi. Although two men were rescued, one individual remains missing.

 

Upon receiving the report, Khok Tum police, rescue divers, and other agencies rushed to the scene. Thirty-two-year-olds Mr. Anon and Mr. Sumethi, who were pulled from a pond by the brave bystander, were transported to a local hospital. Both men were exhausted and had ingested water.

 

According to initial findings, the group had gone camping for a relaxing getaway. In a regrettable turn of events, they consumed alcohol and decided to take a boat out on a nearby pond. The camp owner had cautioned them about strong winds and the lack of lifejackets, but the warning went unheeded.

 

 

Ignoring the advice, Mr. Anon, Mr. Sumethi, and Mr. Rungwit, also 32, ventured onto the water. An hour later, their friend Ms. Phattharapon noticed they were in distress and alerted Anchalee, the camp owner.

 

Sixty-four-year-old Mr. Brand, a French expat vacationing with his Thai wife, sprang into action. Armed with lifejackets, he paddled to the struggling trio. He succeeded in pulling Anon and Sumethi to safety but was unaware that Rungwit was also in the water.

 

Mr. Sumethi later explained to rescuers that strong winds and turbulent currents capsized their boat while they attempted to return to shore. Despite their efforts, they struggled to stay afloat.

 

As of now, the search for Rungwit continues in the six-to-seven meter deep pond.

Well done Monsieur Brand!

Showing courage, springing into action and saving two lives.

 

It still amazes me, after all this time, just how few Thais that can actually swim. Most use life jackets, though, but in a drunken state, like in this case, common sense is easily disregarded, and that basic skill could quite possibly have saved the third life.

It must kill most thais to say thank you to that Farang for helping rescue idiots that can't swim and we're drinking and almost died, so for this new paper if you can call it that and on behalf of the Thai government,,,, We thank you for saving our people from dieing Mr Brand.

About 10 years ago I saved a young girl that was drowning in a local reservoir.  The guy that had brought the kids there never said thanks or anything to us.  He just yelled at the girl.  Probably felt like she had made him lose face.

He could have showed a little gratitude ... but for some , this is asked too much ...

Would he have behaved like this if it would have been a Thai who saved his daughter ...?

Hopefully the outraged Thai netizens are slightly less outraged about farang now.

 

What they should realize is that the Thai environment attracts a certain kind of farang. Provide go go bars and bars with wall to wall cheap prostitutes and little to no effective policing and you get a particular type of farang that is not totally representative of all farang.

 

Anyway, good on this guy do the right thing in a smart way.

I'm guessing he paddled another boat out to them as it was 6-7mtrs deep.

My brain is finally going, when I read paddled out my first impression was he rolled up his trousers, and paddled out. However, 6 metres of water, He must have paddled another boat out. Silly me, but kudos to the Gentleman for His quick actions. 

Will the local authorities give Him a medal or something........er........I doubt it.

It astonishes me how people from a country with so many islands and almost surrounded by water still don't learn how to swim.  I am from a country that doesn't even have 1% of the seafront Thailand has and the first thing my parents wanted me to learn is how to cycle and swim.
