Village Chief Defends Traditional Burning Amid Air Pollution Crisis: As haze season begins in northern Thailand, Ban Mae Lan Kham villagers prepare for traditional land burning, contributing to severe air pollution. Village chief Nanthawat Tiengtrongsakun defends the practice as essential for planting. Chiang Mai suffers from extreme pollution, often exceeding WHO limits. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pledges clean air legislation, targeting agricultural burning. Despite efforts to find alternatives, locals continue the practice for its efficiency.

death by hanging and be sure the crematorium has the proper end of the pipe exhaust filters...

The need to stress breathing clean air is a right and no longer a privilege

Life is unfair deal with it...

If you want change, you have to offer practical alternatives ... in this case, alternatives that poor and uneducated people can adopt easily.

so your mindset tells us, if someone doesn't have money it's ok to steal money from other people, unless they get offered some practical alternatives?

you don't get it, pollution is killing infants, children, adults, old people, destroy the nature and the livelihood of many ... and you are asking for alternatives!!! alternatives for criminals (burning is illegal) and people who to harm to others health ...

btw, there are alternatives, no need to burn and killing people!

the best alternative for thailand and for millions of people is to stop burning ... everyone who defends burning should stay with their own family during the burning season in the very north, and of course without air con or air purifier!

don't forget, millions of people do not have an alternative to live somewhere elese, this people have to breath this toxic air ...

It's the way it's done all over South East Asia.

Most of the "Haze" and "Smoke" is coming from Myanmar, Lao's,Indonesia,Cambodia, etc.

Bad air has been around Chiang Mai forever.

In hindsight I'm glad I chose not build a house there.

It's never going to change.

The alternative adopted in Western countries that banned burning is to plough the stalks into the ground. This does not kill all the bugs so some measures may be required to assist.

There are also stubble digesters that can process the stubble into compost.

The Government could assist with this but do not seem inclined to spend any junket money on it.

Precisely. In my family here, ploughing in is the modus operandi but they have to pay a contractor to come and do it. And guess who gets to pay the contractor ...
