A tragic accident unfolded in Sanam Chai Khet District, Chachoengsao Province, early this morning when a motorcycle with a sidecar plunged into the Wang Elien Canal, resulting in the death of a mother and her son.

The incident occurred at around 12:10am, June 30. Police Lieutenant Piyanat Boonchan, from Wangkhu Police Station, received an urgent call about a motorcycle accident in Ban Khlong Yai Soi. He and a team of rescuers from Phanom quickly rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found a Honda Wave motorcycle with a sidecar, bearing the registration number ขขว 63 Chachoengsao, submerged in the canal. A floating shoe, a headlamp, and a mobile phone in the motorcycle's front basket were visible at the scene.

Rescue workers, along with local villagers, immediately started a search for the missing individuals. They first discovered the body of the mother, 56-year-old Pan, in the middle of the canal.

She had a cloth tied around her waist, which was connected to a piece of traditional Thai cloth (pha khao ma). Shortly after, the body of her 38-year-old son, Preecha, was also found nearby, similarly tied with cloth.

A villager hunting for frogs and toads in an adjacent palm plantation had initially seen the motorcycle’s engine still running in the canal and promptly alerted the rescue centre. Suspecting that the vehicle's occupants had fallen into the water, he urged immediate action to locate them.

During the investigation, Pan's husband revealed that she had been battling chronic illnesses and was under significant stress. Additionally, their son Preecha had a mental condition. These factors might have contributed to the tragic incident, although the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Police Lieutenant Piyanat noted that the bodies have been sent to Sanam Chai Khet Hospital for an autopsy. The investigation will continue as the authorities aim to uncover the precise cause of this unfortunate accident.

Murder suicide?  She was sick and thought she would soon be gone, and with no one around to care for the son, better to take him with her?

Either way, very sad.

Erm...   very odd comment, what makes you suggest that ?

The part below is a little misleading, but thats just an extremely poor and rather irrelevant translation that they were both wearing traditional clothing.

The circumstances of the crash.

It seems like they just went straight into the water, and not even that deep if the basket was still visible.  And that flipped them into the water where they immediately drowned?

Then there's the mother's chronic illness and stress, combined with the son's mental problems.  Add to that Thai people's casual approach to suicide (onto the next life to get away from current troubles), and it's a distinct possibility.

Many disabled people can be 38 years old (or older) and still be completely reliant on others.  It's not a stretch at all to imagine a (Thai) mother ending her child's life if she decided to end her own.
