A Facebook page named "Hey, This is Thailand’s Footpath" has called on Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to handle a situation near the Airport Rail Link Makkasan Station where homeless people and sex workers are occupying the footpath.

 

The page, on Saturday, July 6, shared a photograph showing a clothes rack on the path across from Asoke Skin Hospital. The accompanying caption reported the path is filthy because of makeshift houses, litter, and the presence of sex workers.

 

The photo also displayed an area where possibly homeless individuals are staying, with a plastic sheet as a roof and makeshift beds behind a tree. There were also visible piles of plastic bags.

 

 

The photo drew responses from internet users demanding Chadchart to take action, arguing that footpaths should be for public use, not a selected group, even if they are homeless. Some shared their encounters while others tagged Chadchart's official Facebook page and the relevant authorities.

 

One individual recounted seeing people burning the litter and the local authorities rejecting to handle it as the area belongs to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Another said it might be 100 years before Thailand's footpaths could be as clean as those in other countries, while some questioned if Chadchart was aware of the situation.

 

Channel 7 reported that last year, the Railway Police division was disbanded, leaving the area unattended. As a result, over 10 homeless individuals have made this area their home. Residents reported that numerous transgender sex workers operate on the footpath at night. They have requested for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or the SRT to install lights to deter them.

Similar to major cities globally, the homeless are to be found everywhere. 

You can't make them illegal without putting thousands in prison. I am not even sure many want to join the rat race but mental health issues probably affect a lot. 

What have developed countries done to mitigate this problem?
