Thai People Support the Reclassification of Marijuana as a Narcotic Substance

The Minister of Public Health, Somsak Thepsutin, confirmed that a recent poll affirms most Thai citizens are in favor of designating marijuana as a drug due to the concerns regarding its effect on youngsters. Approximately 100,000 participants took part in a June 11 to 25 survey. The survey was part of a public opinion process concerning the plan to include marijuana and hemp in the Category 5 Drugs list. More than 80% of those polled showed their support for the plan. The plan will soon enter the review process by the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Once the plan gets the green light, the Public Health Ministry will establish rules to officially enlist marijuana and hemp as Category 5 drugs. It is projected this could come into effect on the first day of next year. This would reverse a decision made by the previous government which delisted these substances as drugs. The earlier decision had been fueled by advocacy for the substances' usage in medical and agricultural contexts.

The proposed rules will particularly criminalize cannabis buds and the components of the plant with more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while approving other parts like branches, leaves, roots, and seeds for medical usage as directed by physicians. Nevertheless, the Thailand Cannabis Future Network has opposed this reclassification. They voiced concerns that the change could lead to market dominance by those closely tied to the ruling party and that it would curtail recreational use.

The Interior Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, warned the Public Health Ministry to brace for investigations regarding this changed stance, especially in light of the prior decision to decriminalize the substances.

Guess it depends on who you poll. If you poll a thousand people who are against alcohol my guess is a vey high % of these would also be against dope. This isn't the point though. This should be fully discussed with independent evidence provided and NOT based on some dodgy public opinion poll. This is not how policy of this nature should be made.

Yep. Put the money back into the hands of those who take the kickbacks from the drug lords and smugglers.

Strange. When Anutin said 'decriminalise', no one insisted on it being fully discussed with independent evidence.

Now, after people ignored the 'not recreational' rules, everyone wants a full investigation and to ignore the medical evidence, health ministry and public opinion.

there, fixed it... now it tells the facts

Medical evidence is widely available internationally. The evidence lacking here is that dope is some enormous threat to the health, safety and security of Thailand none of which has been supported. As for the Health Minister having an opinion for recriminalisation this may be the case but odds on he is simply Thaksin's mouth piece. As for public opinion I guess it's what section of the public you ask. If I went into a church and asked everyone there if they believed in God the response would be a 100% yes. If I asked them if dope is evil and should be illegal I would imagine the response would also be 100% yes.

If you have got something to say, say it. Don't presume to know what my mood might be.

I can do a poll too, with questions with answers I like to hear, in a group that is against or just support the subject and the results will be amazing... It will always meet my expectations... or if not I manipulate them.. Nobody will ever check and it looks I am really very important.. That is Thailand

I am speechless to see how vehemently cannabis is being discussed!

No one ever discussed about the Meth problems - ya-bah - which price dropped from 300 Bt. to 20 Bt.?

Ya-bah destroys lives since over 30 years here in Thailand. Nobody speaks about the criminality, rapes and murders due to ya-bah addiction!!!

Cannabis NEVER makes aggressive! On the contrary and the beneficial effects are so many...

So, look at the facts! Not just listening or giving opinions!

Again a genuine example of political incompetence...

Yes, absolutely.

I am not Thai, but I also suggest that marijuana should be banned in Thailand.

The whole saga is getting rather boring, senseless polls, endless chat and no changes.

Actually the last PM at one point said he was considering making meth legal because Thai people were not like foreigners and knew how to handle it.  He said it was useful for students and truck drivers.

polls and stats are never true:
Better in the past year,

how many accidents/deaths caused by drunk drivers
VS

those on Ya Ba

VS

Those caused by stoned drivers   🙂

Anutin has a substantial invested interest in the industry so his comments to be expected!

So most Thai citizens are educated chemists?

Guess this will in effect give the RPT lads an increase in income as well as free weed.

I say leave it up to the medical community to decide the issue, not politicians or uneducated/undereducated citizens.

It seems there are substantial interests in re-criminalising the industry, as in tobacco and and alcohol companies. So this government is working for the elites, not the people. You can expect this all to be exposed if they do re-criminalise marijuana. The fight isn't over yet.

Sorry but I honestly query the statement of "100,000 participants took part in a June 11 to 25" which would have been to ask 7,000+ people every day. There must be a political script behind all this smoke screen (pun intended)!

Would you belive them, I don't

The cannabis trade have only brought this upon themselves, bunch of idiots. Instead of keeping it low key and respectful like cannabis dispensaries in USA, they went full partytime let's all get wasted .

I personally couldn't be happier its going to back to way it was. out of sight

I'm a bit late on this one. It just occurred to me after a beer and a bong. Why don't they survey Thais about alcohol sales bans on Buddhist holidays. Fairly sure the overwhelming majority would say get rid of them. Next weekend Sat 20 and Sun 21 no alcohol sales.

Why should the "medical community" be trusted? Recent history would suggest otherwise. As for this argument you will get one side saying ban it and another saying don't. It needs full independent assessment from all angles. Medical, social and economic.
