Coronavirus or common cold

Featured Replies

Yesterday evening I started to cough and started a runny nose. the cough is not painful but it continues until I run out of breath and choke I bring up a small amount of salty phlegm. Today, I have no appetite and no energy, climbing the stairs leaves me breathless I have no temperature, When I cough I  now have slight pain at the bottom of my ribs. I think I have a common cold but Madamme fears it might be Covid 19. No other family members are showing symptoms. What is it?

No other family members with whom I have spent the last 4 day have any symptoms. What is it?

Get your missus go and buy a covid test

Does it matter, in a day or two it will be gone.

It matters.

Get your wife buy an ATK at 7/11.

Test daily for the next couple of days, they can be negative in the beginning.

If it's covid,  you should wear a mask and isolate yourself for 5 days,  especially isolate from old people, pregnant women and people on steroids (e.g. young women receiving steroids for lupus). After 5 days,  if symptom-free, just wear a mask 5 more days.

Until the first covid test, I always behave as if it were covid.

If you would want to get therapy if it's covid,  then it's a different procedure.

Therapy with Paxlovid makes sense if you are old or fat or diabetic or have high blood pressure (doesn't matter if it's controlled by  medication or not).

Paxlovid is available at Bumrungrad (for 30,000 B), not sure if it's available outside of Bangkok.  Other therapies, especially molnupiravir or favipiravir (popular in Thailand) are hardly useful (Budenosid spray = Pulmicort is probably useful).

Paxlovid needs to be taken asap, latest at day 3-5 of symptoms. You cannot wait until you get worse. You take it now or you don't take it at all.

That's why,  if you want Paxlovid (and can get it) you should do a PCR in a hospital asap, express one.

Most people don't bother to get Paxlovid (or cannot get it anyway). Most of them don't die. Some do (at the moment,  50-100 per week in Thailand die).

Last week I had exactly the same symptoms you mention and the next day after almost falling down the stairs I tested positive for Covid, so I put on a load of clothes and forced myself to work in direct sunshine to sweat it out and on the third day I tested negative so something worked for me.

will continue to isolate for another two days and then everything will be fine

Probably just the flu, but if you are that concerned about it you should get tested and quit using Dr Google or forums for your answers.

Whilst I agree to some extent we should not entirely Pooh Pooh forums, yes most are full of crackpots but some of the suggestions do point us in directions that we would not normally think about researching and although we should not just believe everything we read if we did not have forums and the few SENSIBLE suggestions that come from them we would remain largely ignorant.
