Two Chinese nationals were detained by the Mae Sot Customs in the Tak province of North Thailand for illegally trafficking wildlife on Monday. According to officials who spoke to Channel 7, the arrests were made around 2 pm on Sunday, July 28, after the two appeared suspicious in a pickup truck at the Huay Kralok community in the Mae Sot district.

The men were identified as Xue Guoqing, the driver, and passenger Jiao Jianbin. It emerged that the items they were carrying into Thailand had not been declared to the police. A search of their truck led to the discovery of two animals in separate foam boxes - a 12-kilogram crocodile and a 9-kilogram cobra.

Facing wildlife smuggling charges are:

  • Section 92 of the Fisheries Act: Illegally importing aquatic animals and their products without the required authorization, punishable by a fine five times the value of the imported animal.
  • Section 31 of the Animal Epidemics Act: It prohibits importing or exporting without a permit, with a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both.
  • Sections 242, 244, and 252 of the Customs Act: These sections cover importing or exporting prohibited items, and goods that haven't passed through customs or without permission.

The animals have since been transferred to the Mae Sot Wildlife Checkpoint for further health checks and care.
