Monk wins 12 million baht lottery, plans to help community

The abbot of Wat Si Chumphon in Khon Kaen received a warm celebration from devotees after winning 12 million baht in the national lottery. The 69 year old monk shared his journey of finding the winning numbers and his plans for the prize money.

 

Wat Si Chumphon in Ban Nong Kiao, Khon Kaen, was buzzing with excitement as locals and followers gathered to congratulate Phra Nopporn Khemako, who recently won the first prize in the lottery. The 69 year old abbot purchased two winning tickets, netting him a total of 12 million baht.

 

Phra Nopporn bought the tickets in Ban Phai district after attending a religious ceremony. He explained that he did not receive the numbers in a dream or from any supernatural means but simply decided to buy the numbers 77, 46, and 41 after feeling a strong urge.

“I just felt like buying those numbers, so I went around looking for them and bought them without any special reason.”

The abbot added that he enjoys making merit and has no special talismans or amulets.

 

The monk plans to use the winnings for charitable purposes, including temple renovations and personal health care. He mentioned that he frequently donates money for various causes, sometimes in amounts ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of baht.

 

“I intend to discuss the prize with my relatives before cashing it in. The money will be used solely for making merit, such as celebrating the temple hall and constructing a new chapel, and for my healthcare.”

Despite his significant win, this is not the first time the abbot has had luck with the lottery. He has won smaller amounts in the past, ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of baht. His consistent wins have often been used to fund various temple projects and help those in need.

 

For security reasons, Phra Nopporn entrusted his sister in Maha Sarakham Province to file a police report documenting the winning tickets. This step ensures that the tickets are safely recorded while he waits to cash them in, reported Sanook.

all of this money belongs to the temple - the money he used to buy tickets and the winnings

Please post how you know he is buying lottery tickets with temple money.

The man has raised lots of money for charity over the years and will donate this 12 million to charitable causes too. And all you can do is make snide remarks. Pathetic really.

 A certain relative of mine ( closet possible in a relationship ) brings food and toiletries on a regular basis to a monk ( actual real life brother )

 at the temple down the road ..  and occasionally slip 300 baht in the package... one fine morning while taking Bro monk to the doctor ..   we stopped at a  711 , cause the wife can't go 10 minutes without drink something..   and as soon as I parked and she went into 711  he jumped out and scooted right over to the lottery stall ..    that 300 baht was burning his hands

Looking at my two useless tickets from two days ago. I never win. My wife never wins. In 26 years of playing, my wife hasn't won a single baht.

isn't part of being a monk is to step away from things like that in life ? why not do a fundraiser or an event to raise the money ?

This is totally against the Precept of Lord Buddha teaching... Let's see if the main "Thailand highest Sangha Buddhist Chief monks or committe has to say or answer to criticism.....Like I criticise on "Lent Buddhist day" about close shop 2 days , not selling alcohol...which is so self centered to attain Arahant,Sainthood ,because govt..put food on the table all the time..so just do meditation to attain it...How many monks had achieved it..show us the statistics...instead they gambling on lottery....Show me..closing shops 2 days against or drinking alcohol, you can attain "Arahant...Sainthood" what a heap of hypocrisy...I am happy with my "Mahayana Buddhism" where we are moderate Buddhism practice...instead of saying the right words..As a respect for "Thailand Buddhist Lent days, we ask you "refrain from drinking alcohol for 2 days to mark as a respect for Thai Buddhism" This I can accept...Fair to all...people and religion...but not forcefully imposed 2 days close shop....Just using the excuse of using Lent day as an excuse to show you look good on this days..but against the teaching of Lord Buddha precept...refrain from drinking alcohol....it's good to be smart, but don't try to be smarter in life..

Aside from your own curiosity, I don't see what it has to do with any of us and those seeing their arses and castigating him about his benevolence using the winnings for charitable purposes should really find something better to do with their time.

So what?  Sangha law in Thailand does not prohibit monks from having money.

This wonderful monk has 12 million and helps the community but the government has trillions and can't seem to find the funds to help the community of Thailand
