The National Health Security Office (NHSO) in Thailand wants to replace the current two-dose HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine with a cheaper, more effective single-dose version soon. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin reported that the plan was discussed in a recent NHSO meeting.

The current vaccine used in Thailand has a success rate of 60% against two types of the virus, HPV16 and HPV18. On the other hand, the proposed single-dose vaccine claims to be 90% effective against nine types of the virus.

The HPV virus is known to cause cervical cancer. The government currently gives out the HPV vaccine to females aged between 11 and 20. They are also considering the switch to the new single dose vaccine. If the new vaccine stays affordable, the government is likely to buy it in the next fiscal year, says Somsak.

The government plans to buy around 700,000 to 800,000 doses of the new HPV vaccine. This will be within the same budget allocated for the current two-dose vaccine.

People who have already taken one dose of the current vaccine will switch to the new single-dose version.

It's very old fashioned thinking to give Gardasil to girls only.  Girls get HPV from boys usually and men get cancer of the penis, throat and anus from HPV. But at least they are trying to vaccinate more people.

If anyone wants to get the Gardasil 9 strain vaccine, it is available at the Travel Clinic at Victory Monument for less than private hospitals charge and there is no age limit.
