attempted fraud on Thai debit card at US merchant

Recommended Posts

I deal with the big blue bank mostly and I have a debit card attached to the account I use for daily expenditures.  The balance rarely is >> 4K ฿.  Since I became familiar with QR payments and cardless withdrawals, I set the card's withdrawal limit to 0.  I may just not bother with renewing my debit card at all.

Today I got a text message indicating that someone tried to use it and the transaction was denied.  I called the service number given in the text and the rep was able to tell me that the shop trying to process the transaction was Bass Pro Online.  That shop is a large recreation goods seller in the US.  I had in the past used that card to pay the monthly subscription for a US based publication but had stopped that more than a year ago.  Maybe it's just coincidence that it was a US merchant involved.

I do appreciate that the bank notified me that my card number is probably compromised and that they could identify the merchant where the attempt was made.

There are any number of ways to skim the info off your card without you ever using it or from a data source somewhere that got hacked. Once skimmed the info can and will be sold on the dark web and some point someone may try to buy something usually on line. You're lucky it got caught and denied rather than processed and then caught as a fraudulent purchase.  The bank automatically cancels your card and has to issue a new one. Im going thru this right now with one of my US cards which is getting FedEx to me here sometime in the next 14 days, all for fraudulent charger of $1.75 from a charge via Wechat\Tencent.

It is a Debit/ATM card?  You ever use it for ATM?

yes and yes.  I think it's been about 6 months since I last used it at ATM... I just do cardless withdrawals now.

I think the smartphone method is much more secure.

Of course he do. What a sad question

Now my only use for the debit card is for some online shopping where they don't have a QR code option.  I won't be using it for any more ATM withdrawals.
