Motorcyclist Killed After Dog Runs Into Road, Pickup Driver Flees Scene
Picture from responders. A 37-year-old woman lost her life last night after a stray dog ran into the road, causing her causing her to lose control of her motorbike and collide with an oncoming pickup truck, which then ran over her before fleeing the scene. The fatal crassh occurred at approximately 23:30 on 7 February along the Nakhon Nayok–Khao Thaleuan Road in Ban Yai, Mueang District, Nakhon Nayok. Police Lieutenant Surin Sombut of Nakhon Nayok Police Station received a report of a hit-and-run incident involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. Rescue teams from Sawang Ariya Foundation and an on-call doctor were dispatched to the scene. Authorities discovered the body of Ms. Orawan 37, lying on the roadside. About 15 metres away, her red Vespa motorbike was found severely damaged. Debris from a vehicle’s front bumper and a license plate, “XCh-XX91 Nakhon Nayok,” were also recovered at the scene. Ms. Orawan had suffered fatal head injuries, and her body was sent to SWU Ongkharak Hospital for an autopsy before being released to her family. Eyewitnesses reported that they were riding their motorbikes nearby when they saw Ms. Orawan’s motorbike veer out of control after a dog ran in front of it. She crashed into an oncoming bronze-coloured pickup truck, which then ran over her. The pickup driver briefly stopped, got out of the vehicle to check the scene, but did not call for emergency assistance. Instead, they quickly got back into the vehicle and drove away before rescue teams arrived. Police are now investigating the case further and are working to track down the driver of the pickup truck using the license plate found at the scene. Legal action will be pursued against them as part of the ongoing investigation. -- 2025-02-09 -

Fire Breaks Out at Phuket Hotel
Picture from responders. A fire broke out at a 79-room hotel on Laem Sai Road in Karon, Phuket, on the evening of 7 February, prompting an emergency response from local authorities. Fortunately, swift action by hotel staff and firefighters prevented the flames from spreading too far, but smoke prevented some guests evacuating their rooms, with responders shouting for them to wait on the balconies and not try to climb down. At approximately 18:00 Pol. Capt. Jaras Lempan, an investigator at Karon Police Station, received a report of a fire at the hotel and immediately alerted Pol. Col. Khundej Na Nongkhai, Chief of Karon Police Station. Together with Pol. Lt. Col. Wiwat Chamnankit, Deputy Superintendent of Karon Police, they rushed to the scene to assess the situation. Six fire engines from Karon Municipality arrived promptly, finding thick smoke billowing from the fourth floor of the building. The fire had originated in a housekeeping storage room, which was severely damaged. While the exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest an electrical fault or improper storage of combustible materials may have played a role. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as hotel guests and staff evacuated the premises. Some foreign tourists, caught in the confusion, were seen climbing onto balconies in an attempt to escape the smoke-filled corridors. However, hotel employees acted swiftly, using fire extinguishers to contain and suppress the flames before they could spread further. By the time emergency responders arrived, the fire he been contained to the store room, preventing any fire damage to the guest rooms, although heat and smoke spread throughout parts of the building. No injuries were reported among guests or staff, though many were visibly shaken by the incident. Video footage captured by onlookers showed thick smoke pouring from the affected floor, with emergency crews working to ensure the blaze was completely extinguished. Firefighters spent nearly an hour ventilating the area and conducting safety inspections before allowing guests to return to their rooms. Authorities have praised the quick-thinking hotel employees for their decisive action, which prevented a more severe outcome. However, officials have emphasised the need for all businesses in the area to review their fire safety measures to ensure they are adequately prepared for emergencies. Karon Police, in collaboration with fire investigators, will conduct a thorough inspection of the hotel to determine whether proper fire safety protocols were followed and if additional precautions are needed. The total cost of damages is yet to be assessed, but hotel management has assured guests that operations will continue as normal as possible with hopefully minimal disruption, with some rooms and areas, off the effected corridor outside the store, currently being unavailable due to smoke and heat damage. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire remains ongoing. -- 2025-02-09 Video courtesy of Phuketinsta. -4312936545988928842.mov -

Cyber Police to Take Legal Action Against Man Who Threw Dog Into the Sea
Picture courtesy of Matichon. Cyber police are preparing to take legal action against a Myanmar national caught on video throwing a dog into the sea, an act that has sparked public outrage. Authorities are also coordinating with the Immigration Bureau to consider deportation. At a press conference held at the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) at 14:30 on 8 February, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong Phiophan, CCIB Commissioner, was joined by Pol. Maj. Gen. Wiwat Khamchamnarn, Deputy Commissioner, Pol. Maj. Gen. Tinkorn Rangmat, Acting Deputy Commissioner, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Deepor, to address the case. Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong stated that the video, which shows a man cruelly throwing a dog into the sea, was widely shared online and condemned as an inhumane act. Watchdog Thailand, an animal welfare organisation, filed a complaint, prompting National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet to order an immediate investigation. The perpetrator has been identified as a Myanmar national residing in Thailand illegally. Cyber police are working closely with local officers in Chumphon, where the incident took place, to track him down. The Immigration Bureau has been contacted to determine whether the suspect will be deported in addition to facing legal consequences under Thai law. Authorities are also investigating whether others were involved. Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong issued a warning to all foreign nationals residing in Thailand: “Anyone living in Thailand must respect and abide by Thai laws. Those who violate them will face full legal action.” The investigation remains ongoing as police seek to bring those responsible to justice. -- 2025-02-09 -
