Pictures from responders.

On 19 August, at 09:15, Mr. Natchanon Sonprasert, Director of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 16, Chai Nat, directed  a team of emergency responders to assist in the rescue of two individuals who had fallen into a groundwater well in a paddy field located in Moo 8, Chai Nat Subdistrict, Mueang Chai Nat District, Chai Nat Province.

The response team utilised vertical rescue equipment, and used breathing apparatus to enter the confined space of the approximately 10 metre deep well. The responders successfully extracted and recovered one male and one female from the well. The operation was completed at 11:00, but sadly both were found to have died.

The two victims, Mr. Yongyut (surname withheld), age 50, and Ms. Darunee (surname withheld), age 43, were a married couple and were reported missing by their son after not returning, after going to pump water to the paddy fields.

I'd guess that there was a problem with the pump at the bottom of the well and one went down to try and fix it, got into trouble and the second followed down to try and help and hit the same trouble. The air at the bottom of those wells can be very low on oxygen. An old guy in our village used to hand dig deep wells and says he knows several people who died of oxygen starvation whilst digging.

10 metres deep, with no ropes, harness or equipment to get out let alone rescue someone...

seems very odd.

Confined space,"need training to enter"  but Thailand no safety awareness
