Revisiting History: The Unlikely Campaign to Vilify Winston Churchill
That's a misunderstanding arising from quoting only part of what Churchill said. Below is the full quote. "Lachrymatory gas" refers to what we call "tear gas" today. In 1919, tear gas, mustard gas and deadly chlorine gas were all called "poison gas." Churchill was referring to the use of tear gas, not deadly gas. "I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. We have definitely adopted the position at the Peace Conference of arguing in favour of the retention of gas as a permanent method of warfare. It is sheer affectation to lacerate a man with the poisonous fragment of a bursting shell and to boggle at making his eyes water by means of lachrymatory gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes. The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gasses; gasses can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those affected. " (WSC, minute from the War Office, 12 May 1919, in Martin Gilbert, ed., Winston S. Churchill, Document Volume 8: War and Aftermath, December 1916-June 1919 (Hillsdale: Hillsdale College Press, 2008), p 649) Churchill went on to say at the same War Office meeting: “If it is fair war for an Afghan to shoot down a British soldier behind a rock and cut him in pieces as he lies wounded on the ground, why is it not fair for a British artilleryman to fire a shell which makes the said native sneeze? It is really too silly.” (Ibid. p 662) There's some dispute over whether the British actually used gas in Iraq. No sources made that accusation at the time; that came first in 1986. He saw Gandhi as a threat to the British Empire, while he regarded Hitler as a threat to the balance of power in Europe. He swa Hitler as a dangerous yet effective dictator and Gandhi as an unrealistic mystic without the skill, acumen or experience to lead a highly diverse country. He famously referred to Gandhi as a half-naked fakir. He was specifically concerned with Hitler's oppressive domestic policies; the rearmament of Germany and Hitler's goal of territorial expansion. Unlike most European politicians, Churchill had actually read Mein Kampf and had seen jackbooted Nazis in the streets of Germany before Hitler took power. He had a real fear of what Hitler could accomplish. His warnings went largely unheeded because appeasement was the favored policy of British governments in the 1930s. Concessions to Hitle were seen as the best way to avoid war and appeasement was favored by the public, especially the upper classes. In the 1930s, Churchill wasn't trusted by many members of the Conservative party due to his failure as First Lord of the Admiralty and his switch from the Liberal Party. -

You certainly pay for it in France, the national security system will pay 70% and the remaining 30% is for you to pay if you don't have additional insurance. And spend a year out of the country without paying tax and you are not covered anymore. I'm no expert regarding the UK, but I know it is less generous than France. Lots of people misunderstand the way "nanny States" work, yes they will treat you first and not let you die like in Thailand, but ultimately you are footing the bill. -

Latest developments and discussion of recent events in the Ukraine War
Russia was a powerful Country that scared many and took Nuke threat to the Brink in the 60s. After that they started to fade since the cold war days. The Red Army was defeated in Afghan they never recovered in my opinion. They thought they would be raising the Russian flag within a week in Kiev wrong again two and half tears later there not even in Ukraine city's. Putin is a a bulldog with a loud bark buts that all it is. He is scared of committing his top fighters to fly over Ukraine airspace his fleet is keeping well away from the Coasts in Ukraine. Instead he will lob missiles into restaurants' Schools and Hospitals racking up more war crimes. -

New McCharthyism Sweeping the USA and the World?: What examples have you seen?
Dear Folks, From my perspective, having lived a very long time, already, I now feel similarities between the Old McCharthyism and some Nouveau-McCharthyism which is even worse than the old McCharthyism. I am talking about imposition of the need for self-censorship among almost anyone. And, I am talking about TAMPING DOWN and Stamping Out almost any opportunity for free debate at major hallowed halls of the Greatest Universities in the Land!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, more of a travesty is the fact that, even just among the Common Man, like you and me, we no longer seem to have the freedom to say what we like. I am talking about the increasing need to self-censor when we discuss almost anything slightly controversial, whether it be with friends, or, maybe now, even in our own minds....perish the THOUGHT! Some of you guys call this WOKEISM...but it is not wokeism in the real sense. WOKE is not what most people think. Just ask Nim Chimpsky. All that I am saying is that.... When we lose the freedom to discuss/debate, with complete freedom, almost any topic....at ANY university....then.... This will have major negative repercussions for the likes of lesser mortals, who don't know what's what. I am not speaking, here, about any particular topic or issue, which might be discussed... I am only talking about the need for freedom and tolerance which will enable us to talk freely, and express freely, different points of view. I guess you have heard about the Chinese Cultural Revolution which set back China many years, at the time, and destroyed so many lives. And so I ask you: Is the USA and the rest of the western world now engaging in a New Cultural Revolution where, just as in the 1960s in China, nobody is allowed to express ideas, or even to THINK ideas? Sure, back in the day, In China.... During the Cultural Revolution... Almost all thought was completely controlled by The Party. And, it seems to me that the USA is doing it's best to copy The Chinese Cultural Revolution, but .... With American Characteristics..... I am sure you recall this book: And so now.... Seems we are getting Chinese Cultural Revolution THOUGHT CONTROL with..... American/Western Characteristics. So... The question is: Do you feel able to speak your mind at university.... Or, speak your mind when out and about, with so-called friends.... Or, for that matter, do you feel free to speak your mind to your WIFE? Just wondering, because...were are obviously now entering a Brave New World of Weird-Speak. Profs are getting banned for discussing issues that once were discussable. Where, OH where....
