Purdey Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 The story is a good illustration of why governments have never won a "war on drugs" anywhere in the world. When people with mental health issues are left to live on the streets, one cannot be surprised if they want to deaden the pain.

Soi Buokaew is a sewer. It's dirty, and it smells, and I won't blame the poor woman for it. I can't take my 17-year-old near it. He hates the hookers with 70-year-old men, and he's right; it stinks.

Cabradelmar Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Addicts, the abused, and the mentally ill know that their best changes for survival are in those places where their behavior is least disturbing to those around them (bad begets bad). Apparently some passers by offered her money , but what did the "local reporters" do other than stand and stare whilst taking photos of her on their mobile phones? What image do the authorities think Pattaya has globally ? and more importantly, how have they actually arrived at that conclusion? Soi Hong Nan as it is referred to by many, is a toilet and you see people cooking over top of a grey water drain and vent with the vent directly under the food being prepared. It should be closed. But I have to ask, why does anybody care about the image of one of the largest “reasonably safe” brothels in the world? I have been here since 1997 and I came for exactly that reason alone - not for cheap food or warm sunshine. Vancouver is and was too expensive for girls. 1

I have been here since 1997 and I came for exactly that reason alone - not for cheap food or warm sunshine. Vancouver is and was too expensive for girls. I came in 1995 for exactly the same reason, I think back in those days everybody came for the same reason, and , people were a bit less pretentious. Thailand was a lot more fun back then and nobody even mentioned the words "family resort" it was sin city simple as that and I loved it. Sadly the world is full of puritans and kill joys, they don't like to see people having fun , some have tried their best to have it all stopped and the "family resort " was their intended aim, but they never quite managed to achieve their intentions so what's left is a bit of a sad hybrid , there maybe a few water parks and other stuff for families to do but there is still a lot of mongering going on, but its far from ideal and a poor imitation of what it used to be. It puts me in mind of "soft porn" narrow minded people don't like to watch it and neither do those who like hard core porn I haven't been there (properly) for a long time must be 20+ years but I did spend a couple of days there with the missis a couple of years before the covid scam, I was not very impressed, the bar girls all seemed to have got a bit fatter and more ugly, and the place just did not have the same vibe it used to have , I doubt I will ever go there again, and I feel a bit sorry for those who never really experienced it back in its heyday 1 1

Whether Christian or not, the vast majority of Westerners are influenced by a Christian culture/moral/value system over many centuries. It would seem that Thais would be more likely (than apparent in this article) to want to help her out, with their very conscientious making of merit in mind. I definitely don't know the inner workings of their Buddhism... is it more important to go out of one's way to the temples, to make merit, to help build more edifices with shiny glass bits on them and help the Abbots get nicer cars than to help those who fate has brought along one's path, as if a test, and see how sincere one's merit making is by helping where one's help isn't likely to be seen by anyone? Maybe sincerity in merit making doesn't matter at all? I have no idea. I doubt the Abbots and other monks, enjoying their lives in the temples, care if the donations came with sincerity in mind or not.... It reminds me of an acquaintance who was head of a department at one of the top Thai universities (in BKK). He only cared about getting funded. He was a monk until his education was finished - through his PhD. Then he quit monkhood and used his newfound credentials to start a business as well as begin his teaching career. I guess monkhood can be a good scholarship program. That was a bit of a rabbit trail! Anyway... this is very curious to me - this image of Westerners trying to help her out, and the Thais apparently using her for sensationalism and complaining. To be fair, I'm sure there are Thais who care about her and would want to help, just as some Westerners did. But very strange how the reporting came out like this.

Thailand is a tough country for locals. So they are tough with one another. When you have to deal with a significant load of garbage yourself, you're probably less likely to help others. You're probably right about the influence of Christianity in our behaviours. Could add to that socialist, the wellfare state, the enlightment. But all of these are also rooted in Christianity in a way or another. Westerners should give themselves more credit. We are a great civilisation. Not perfect but we are overall pretty decent people compared to many. You're also right that the reporting is pretty biased. 1

I think poverty & mental health issues are strongly intertwined in Thailand. So, have no hope for betterment in the quality of their lives, especially in the rural areas. So, young people run away to the Big City or descend into the abyss of Yabaland. HiSO do not care much. it seems. 1
