NZ cancels new Antarctic base.

Featured Replies

Common sense has triumphed as the "5 star hotel" envisaged by the IMO bureaucrat idiots that run Antarctica NZ has been cut by the government as costing too much ( no surprise there ).

However the stated excuse ( too risky to transport ) by the numpties is IMO just blatant lies trying to excuse their idiocy in trying to build it in the first place. It's a small base in Antarctica for working people and scientists, not a tourist hotel for millionaires.

Antarctica New Zealand has confirmed a new plan for the redevelopment of Scott Base, scrapping a previous design it says was too risky to transport.

I actually knew the man that designed the existing rebuild, and he was ( died long ago ) an object of ridicule by the people that worked down there. A shining example of someone that knows nothing about something thinking they know everything about it. Seems his legacy lived on too long.

Ref the photo of the ship delivering the modules to the base site. That area was always iced in in the past, and while it may have changed recently, there is no telling that when it came time to deliver the modules that it would be ice free all the way  to McMurdo, which would require begging the US to use the icebreakers to make a way for the ship and that would not be cheap. Like I said, bunch of numpties.

BTW, in the photo the existing base has gone, so one wonders where the base staff would be living while the new base was installed :cheesy:
