The driver of a pick-up truck carrying workers lost control and plowed into a roadside som tam shop, leaving one person dead and five others injured. A som tam vendor narrowly escaped after hearing the pick-up and running for cover just in time.

 

On October 6, Pol. Capt. Suranun Meephan, an investigator with Ao Noi Police Station, responded to an emergency call about a pick-up truck veering off the road and crashing into a shop. The incident occurred on a rural highway connecting Ban Nong Yai Aem to Baan Nok in Moo 15, Ban Rai Yub, Ao Noi Subdistrict, Mueang District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Rescue workers from Sawang Prachuap Thammasathan Foundation were dispatched to assist the victims and transport them to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital.

 

 

At the scene, police found a white Toyota 4WD pick-up truck, license plate number from Prachuap, that had crashed off the side of the road. A crowd of onlookers gathered nearby, and tyre marks stretched approximately 50 metres, indicating the vehicle had lost control.

 

The roadside som tam shop was in ruins, grills toppled, and the tiled roof shattered. A cow near the shop, had also been injured in the collision. Of the six people involved, two men and three women were injured, while one man, identified as 68-year-old Sombun Plai-ngam, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

 

According to witnesses, the truck was carrying six workers, all related, from Ban Nong Mai Kaen and heading to work on a pineapple farm in Ban Nikhom Kilo 8. The vehicle veered off the road, hitting the cow before crashing into the som tam shop, scattering goods and causing significant damage. As the truck lost control, the passengers were thrown from the vehicle, resulting in injuries and one fatality.

 

Ms. Chanphen, also known as May, a 32-year-old som tam vendor, recounted that she was preparing her stall as usual when she heard the vehicle lose control. In a split second, she abandoned her stall and ran to safety. “The truck crashed into the shop, toppling everything. Only the front part of the shop remains intact. I was so scared—if I hadn’t jumped out of the way, I wouldn’t have survived,” she said.

 

Ms. Chanphen also mentioned that she usually brings her child to sit in front of the shop in the mornings, right where the truck crashed. Fortunately, on that day, she had left her child at home, narrowly avoiding what could have been a tragic outcome.

 

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and will proceed with legal actions accordingly.

Crashes Into Roadside Som TamShop, ...obviously....no power poles in the vicinity

No matter what happened in the vehicle and why, in most countries the Somtam shop would not have had permission to be there.
