A young man who had been fishing with friends along a canal suddenly decided to take a swim, tragically drowning shortly after.

 

On October 6, police from Thanyaburi Police Station were notified of a drowning incident near a bridge over Khlong 9, in front of Tawanna Ville Village, Moo 1, Lam Phak Kut Subdistrict, Thanyaburi District, Pathum Thani Province. Rescue workers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and a team of divers arrived at the scene and conducted a search, watched by a large crowd of locals, locating the body of the deceased around 21:00 after a three-hour search.
 

The victim was later identified as Mr. Hein Pyae Tun, an 18-year-old Myanmar national who worked at a local factory in the Khlong 9 area.

 

 

According to Mr. Wasan Thongchuea, a volunteer with the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, the victim had gone fishing with two coworkers by the canal. At one point, he expressed a desire to swim and immediately jumped into the water. However, after reaching the middle of the canal, he was unable to swim back and tragically drowned. Local residents who witnessed the event immediately alerted the authorities, and a dive team was dispatched to the scene. After three hours of searching, the team recovered the body.

 

Police officers from Thanyaburi Police Station stated that they have documented the scene and will send the body for further examination at the Thammasat University Forensic Science Centre in Rangsit for an autopsy. The police will also contact the victim’s family and employer to arrange for the body to be released.

So, here they watched and waited until the guy could not swim no more to call rescue, while a Chinese on a raft was reported for disturbance.

what if his 'friends' helped him swim, drinking buddies seem to stab and club each other to death on a regular report

Two friends who couldn't swim either... calling authorities is a life sentence, they won't get there in time to save him.

Daily under reported occurrence 

A large majority of people here are never taught to swim as children. Care isn't something shown much here for the young. No one is going to jump in and help because most, if not all of those watching, can't swim themselves. This will continue forever here.

I have heard that the rescue of the drowning is pretty dangerous.

As the dying  often grabs at the helper and 2 of them can go down together as the result...

Did he jump into the water not knowing he couldn't swim?

If so, he is really hopelessly stupid.

Reminds me of one old saying.

There's a couple things here that are quite remarkable, and I will try to say that without sounding totally unsympathetic. First of all it takes about 10 minutes to learn how to swim, at least to learn how to swim adequately. I've taught people how to swim so I know it's a fairly simple process. So obviously this guy did not know how to swim because it's not difficult to get back from the middle of the canal to the shore, unless there's a raging tide happening. The second thing that comes to mind is if you know that you don't know how to swim and you know that you can barely stay afloat why do you deliberately wade out into water that's fairly deep? What on earth was he thinking, or was he thinking at all?

True, if you aren't a good swimmer and can control the person, calming them down so you can help, it could be bad for both. Two people together can help another.

Have you noticed the ponds they get fish from daily here, especially after draining the rice ponds after harvest? The same waters they fish, get snails in and swim have a lot of bacterium that can enter body openings.

I live in Chiang Mai.

There is an old  moat  surrounding  its old city.

During the hottest season of the year(March-April), I often see bunch of children around 8-10 Y.O. play and swim there; in the murky brown unclear water that hardly looks clean(some life sewerage pours into it).

 

I wonder if the photo below shocks you?
