Why Do You Even Drink?
I don't want to be zooted for hours. I don't drink and drive. I don't vomit. Hangovers if I get them last a lot less than 24 hours. I have enough money to spend on nice drinks and enjoy drinking them. I don't like cannabis. -

First Conviction in Victoria for Nazi Salute: Self-Proclaimed Nazi Faces Sentencing
It really is awful how quickly received wisdom on the subject has changed. I despair at one or two comments on here. Just two decades ago and the Anti-Defamation League (a Jewish lobby organisation) would have been defending the actions of the Nazi (most famously they defended a literal Nazi group in 1978 in Chicago). The view back then-- correctly-- was that the key to democracy was freedom of expression no matter what. I despair at these increasing infringements on freedom. Now we have people thinking it is okay to pass laws criminalising criticising passages of the Koran. This is outrageous. There is a giant leap between hatred towards a group as such and criticism of a religious text. Do you think anybody should be prosecuted for criticising Talmudic verses? I am a huge fan of the pro-free speech FIRE organisation. And I strongly support attempts in the UK to roll back speech legislation to the 1960s. This increasing obsession with safetyism and toxic empathy will slowly corrode the very heart of democracy. -

Most voters support Trumps Mass Deportation of Illegals, Pew Survey
I found many articles online that state that immigrant labor is a net positive for the US economy. This is but one example: https://www.brookings.edu/articles/do-immigrants-steal-jobs-from-american-workers/ Most articles with this viewpoint come from organizations that could be called "left of center", so I kept looking for articles that were written by organizations that come from the right of the political spectrum and found this: https://www.cato.org/blog/three-reasons-why-immigrants-arent-going-take-job Granted, Cato is Libertarian, but to me that's right-wing on steroids. Then I came across this economist's article in Politico: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/09/trump-clinton-immigration-economy-unemployment-jobs-214216/ He's a bit of an outlier, but I find his arguments interesting. I note Borjas does not call for building a border wall or for mass deportation or curtailing immigration. Instead he seems to be in favor of redistributing the surplus profits that immigrant labor generates via taxes. Then I found this article that would seem to undermine at least part of Borjas's position: https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/immigrant-and-native-workers-compete-different-low-skilled-jobs I haven't yet found any serious articles from credible sources that promote the idea that mass deportation of immigrants is beneficial to America or to any segment of the labor force. -

Israel Hamas War the Widening Middle East Conflict
Is there any safe place in Gaza? While the focus is on Lebanon, the killing of civilians continues in Gaza. At least 30 people, including six children and two women, were killed near the central city of Deir el-Balah overnight, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported, after houses in the Bureij refugee camp were struck. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/8/israeli-strikes-kill-dozens-in-gaza-as-grisly-anniversary-passes -

Can the Growatt SPF-5000ES inverter manage sodium-ion batteries?
If this could be of any use for someone looking into the topic : - We got in touch with a sales representative who asked 'the engineer'. After a while, we received an answer to our question : "yes" (it can manage Sodium-Ion batteries). I personally would have loved a somewhat more documented answer going further into the settings flexibility, but I guess we should be happy with that - The SPF-5000ES has been discontinued and is replaced by the SPF6000 ES Plus -

Drunk Driver Causes Multiple Vehicle Collision in Pattaya
A traffic incident involving multiple vehicles occurred at approximately 01.25 October 9, on the Pattaya-Naklua Road near Soi 18 in Bang Lamung, Chonburi. Local authorities, led by Pol. Lt. Amorntep Phetthim, received reports of the collision and quickly dispatched patrol officers and rescue teams to the scene. Upon arrival, officials discovered a white Toyota Alphard, registered in Bangkok, with severe damage on its left side. Nearby, a white Toyota van, registered in Rayong, had also sustained front-end damage. Additionally, an orange Ford Ranger pickup truck, registered in Bangkok, was found with its right rear wheel torn off, scattering debris across the road. The primary cause of the accident was identified as a black Ford Ranger pickup truck, registered with red plates from Rayong, which the driver had lost control and veered onto the sidewalk. The vehicle’s front wheel was detached and found in the middle of the road. The front of the truck was damaged. The driver, Ms. Ploy, 29, was heavily intoxicated and was restrained by bystanders before authorities arrived. She admitted to having consumed alcohol prior to the incident. Mr. Apichat, 59, the owner of the Toyota Alphard, recounted the events. He explained that he was driving towards Pattaya’s Dolphin Roundabout when he noticed the black Ford Ranger speeding in the opposite lane. The vehicle crossed into his lane and collided head-on with his car, giving him no time to react. After hitting his car, the Ford Ranger lost control and struck several parked and oncoming vehicles. Pol. Lt. Amorntep, the investigating officer, confirmed that CCTV footage captured the Ford Ranger swerving into oncoming traffic before crashing into multiple vehicles. A total of four vehicles were damaged in the accident. Ms. Ploy, the driver of the Ford Ranger, was taken into custody, and a breathalyser test revealed her blood alcohol level was 244 milligrams, significantly exceeding the legal limit. She now faces charges in accordance with the law. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure proper legal action is taken. -- 2024-10-09 -

Surprised no reaction from BYD owners on this forum
So, according to you, if someone does not own an EV, that means that someone can't possibly be informed about EVs. Interesting. But then, I don't expect much logic from people who buy such cars. -
