In a sting operation, Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police arrested a 34-year-old man, identified as Mr. Cholathit, known as “Lieutenant James,” for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from local residents. The suspect, allegedly descended from a prominent family, had reportedly set up a fake “special task force” group, posing as a detective with the sole purpose of intimidating and extorting innocent citizens.

On the evening of October 30, after days of surveillance, Metropolitan Police officers captured “Lieutenant James” at an ice cream shop in Talat Phlu, a location known to be one of his frequent haunts. Police executed a sting operation, which involved sending a fake discount voucher for the shop to lure him out of hiding. Upon his arrest, police discovered a 9mm loaded firearm with 12 rounds, a fake police ID, and police uniforms in his possession.

Earlier in July, Mr. Cholathit allegedly entered a kratom shop in the Bang Mod area, posing as a high-ranking officer. Claiming to be from the “Bangkok Investigation Unit,” he demanded 3,000 baht from the shop owner to overlook alleged illegal activities. Moreover, he demanded a monthly “protection fee” of 500 baht. His actions were recorded on CCTV, leading to an official complaint and a subsequent investigation.

For weeks, Mr. Cholathit evaded capture, utilising lookouts in local neighbourhoods to warn him of approaching authorities. His elusive tactics frustrated police efforts to apprehend him. However, under the leadership of Police Major General Teeradej Thammasuthi, a plan was devised to “lure the tiger from its cave,” ultimately leading to his capture.

During questioning, Mr. Cholathit confessed to the charges. He explained that his family heritage, supposedly with deep roots in the police force, inspired him to want to become an officer. However, due to life circumstances, he was unable to pursue his dream legitimately. Instead, he resorted to impersonation, purchasing uniforms and tactical gear to fulfill his fantasy of being in law enforcement.

“I only committed the act once,” he claimed, despite evidence suggesting he had extorted multiple victims under the guise of being a detective.

The police seized the following items as evidence:

1. A 9mm SIG SAUER firearm, loaded and ready.

2. 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

3. A fake police identification card with his photo.

4. Two police uniforms.

5. A bulletproof vest.

Police Major General Teeradej announced that the investigation would be expanded to uncover further victims and activities. He urged anyone who may have been extorted or threatened by the suspect to come forward. “This case is not just about the crime committed; it’s about the safety and trust of the public,” he emphasised.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Police, in accordance with the directives of Police General Kittirat Phanphet, reaffirmed their commitment to prioritising public welfare and cracking down on crimes that threaten the security of residents.

This incident serves as a reminder for citizens to be cautious of individuals claiming authority without proper identification or authorisation.
