Thailand's Labour Ministry is actively seeking avenues to bolster the employment rate of Thai workers in Singapore, with a specific focus on the thriving shipyard industry. Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn and ministry officials conducted strategic discussions over the weekend in Singapore to explore enhancing the labour market for Thai nationals.

Presently, around 4,000 Thai workers are employed in various sectors across Singapore, from construction to electronic manufacturing. Aiming to widen this presence, the recent discussions aligned with the ministry’s overarching policy to promote Thai skills abroad. Singapore has shown keen interest in attracting skilled Thai welders and experienced construction professionals to support burgeoning infrastructure projects, particularly within the shipyard sector.

Phiphat underscored the dual benefit of this initiative, which would not only develop the skills of Thai workers but also generate financial support for families back home. The initiative is deemed a critical step in strengthening the bilateral relationship, fostering economic growth, and enriching the skills of Thai workers through international experience.

Certainly better than berry picking or dodging bombs in Israel,

Singapore would be my choice if seeking overseas work.

do thais that work and live there have a path to citizenship in the future?

Singapore usually doesn't grant permanent residency to the manual workers from abroad.

They issue that residency only to those with high income and academic background.

In case of female laborers, there is a mandatory 3 monthly pregnancy test.

When found positive, they are immediately ordered to leave SGP.

The same applies when foreign migrant workers stay jobless for a couple of months(male or female).

And any workers(whether own national or aliens) can be fired on the spot without any advance notice.

One friend of mine(web designer) experienced it in the past.

He used to work for It firm run by the westerner.

But suddenly lost that job when the company owner decided to close his business.

That's what I heard of by now.

Any Singaporean labor issue expert, Please comment.

the middle man gets rich from exporting those labors

They do in Australia.  My wife is an Australian citizen and started working full time after one month in the country.  Something Thailand would never allow foreigners to do.  Thai's believe it's their right to work in foreign countries and get citizenship but also believe that foreigners have absolutely no right to work or have citizenship in Thailand.  Thai's can also buy land in Australia, they don't have to lease it.
