Spike in American's interest in moving abroad post election -- hot air yet again?

Speaking as an expat who didn't move based on U.S. politics (I liked the situation at the time I left) we're seeing once again the threats of leaving and verifiable interest in actually doing so.

But will more than usual actually do so?

I would predict because the maga movement has revealed itself as not a fluke, that more than usual will actually move abroad this time, but no spectacular numbers.

This time is different, but moving abroad is still the big flippin' deal it always has been, and most people are all hat no cattle about it.

I do think there will be a spike in state self sorting though, a big trend already happening.

In other words, people feeling red moving to red states, people feeling blue moving to blue states.

That happened dramatically in Florida already.

In the linked article, THAILAND was the 23rd most popular search choice. Canada number one of course. Americans can be so predictable sometimes.

Wow, I actually agree with the OP /  @Jingthing, who would have thought, small miracles.

Agree with the blues moving to blue, and reds to red states.  Just common sense really and quite easy to do.  As I've lived in 6 or 7 different states, only for work, as don't care about folks social issues.

Not the linked article (didn't read) as the 'skyrockets' just told me to not waste my time.

OP also leaves that thought open ... how many actually would do, as not nearly as simple as state to state.  Agree ... "most people are all hat no cattle"

The international press finds this topic juicy.

There is a verifiable big spike in searching about moving abroad.

But remains to be seen if much ever becomes of it.

Of course Americans are moving abroad all the time for non-political reasons.

Digital nomads trying to avoid high U.S. costs, and of course retirees more and more.

Moving abroad is not so simple, really.  Easy to sit around and think about it, and yet it's something else again to actually do it.  Selling real estate, selling cars, selling all your "junk." Maintaining a storage POD if there are things you want to keep. Bank account issues. Taxation issues.  Medical considerations for some people.

Exactly though it is definitely more feasible in the internet age.

I have found U.S. financial institutions extremely unfriendly to expats and that has given me major headaches for decades now.

If I knew what I know now, I might have hesitated, but I don't regret it either.

So many people move abroad totally unprepared, with very little research, and end up being forced back in shame very quickly.

Not that there's anything wrong with moving back if you want to of course.

Expanding on the red - blue self sorting that as you agree is definitely a big thing in the U.S. a problem I have found with that is that blue areas tend to be much more expensive!

I have a little hobby of always having a short list of possible U.S. destinations I might move back to if I'm forced to for whatever reason and in my case they need to be as low budget as possible!

So by necessity my lists are always dominated by places that are very red. Now of course not all people in even very red areas are red, but moving where you don't really belong isn't at all ideal.

I have lived in more red areas before but nothing extreme.

You know the kind of place where the first thing people ask is what church do you go to.

There are also some options in some blue cities, but they tend to be places with high crime and cold weather.

So really not so great.

State to States yes but as for leaving U.S, it is  boasting like Trump:cheesy:

People leaving stateside in significant numbers will be because of what COULD & MIGHT happen as shown on my Dow Jones monthly chart.  Donald Trump has zip to do with this.  However if the Dow crashes HE will be blamed for it.  Truth is neither Joe Biden nor Donald is the Cause.

The forces at play dwarf all leaders.

Note the following in the chart:

Grid is from the Great Depression low in 1932.  That’s the anchor.  The next wave top anchor is the October 2007 top & wave low is March 2009.

Boom!  Grid called the Covid crash perfectly at 161.8%

So where are we at today?  At 261.8%.   This is significant resistance.

Now here’s the thing:  Dow can reverse here or blast right thru’ to its ultimate destination at 423.6%.  If the latter then Trump will have a magnificent 4 years.  However if the former, i.e. 261.8% causes the halt, then you will see the reality a staggering exodus from stateside

unemployment will shoot to 40%+ etc.,

Fasten seatbelts, hide & watch

Very true.  Not a single one of my buddies can pull off leaving even for a year.   They dream of it when they talk to me but the obstacles to surmount are too staggering in their own opinion.

I hope they don’t move to Thailand.

We have enough already.

Nah ... they don't live here, and are only on the forum.  Yet to meet a leftie in person, thankfully.

One of the last places they'd move to, as ultra conservative Thai people would ignore them.  No soapbox, no joy :coffee1:

Maybe, just maybe (probably not for the moving abroad part) this is going to be much bigger than before:

More than half of Harris voters want to relocate following Trump win: survey

Of the 10% planning to move or seriously considering it, 90% are looking into moving to another country, with the top choices being Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico. California, New York and Colorado were the top three choices for those considering moving to another state.

Rising US Dollar strength for the foreseeable future.  So, $1.50 per plate approx. today will be $1.00 when USD-THB hits 50.

Another example:

My studio apt. rent in Chiang mai is 8,200 Baht/ mo. = $246 approx.

When USD-THB hits 50 my rent will be $164/month (assuming no rent increase for simplicity 😏)

I believe USD-THB will take out the previous historial top at around 55 Baht approx.

Americans can live in Thailand in sybaritic splendor for the foreseeable future (moneywise).

Keep dreaming from 50 thb to the dollar

😁 My dreams are coming true, all of them.  Many said the same thing back in 2006-2008, namely the $ is dead as it was getting hammered by even the lowly Indonesian Rupiah.  THEY were laffffing at us.  Then the turn came in March 2008.

King Dollar bolted out the dungeon and has not looked back since.

The Trend is your friend until it bends & violates a Trend Low.

See faint red line from left to right at top of the US Dollar Index chart above.  This red line is monthly resistance, highly significant - if Champ successfully breaks out above this, as it appears to be doing right now, we’ll be swinging.

A strong USD encourages Americans to travel

Thread title mentions Americans leaving due to election result.  I don’t think so.  Its all talk like back in 2016.  However in the larger view, US passport holders is at 42% now in 2024 as opposed to a mere 3% in 1989 thus showing a long-term rising TREND.  Now throw in a ferocious Dollar and the incentive to at least travel is climbing.
