LOL. I am aware that the luvvies call it Malaysia, but I deliberately call it Malaya

And, for me Rangoon will always be Rangoon.

Calcutta will always be Oh! Calcutta!

Unfortunately, British governance is no longer in force in these two places.

Ever since the British left the colonies, it seems the natives want to leave the colonies, too, choosing to emigrate to the UK, and for good reason.

The people of HK sorely miss British governance.

They would have gladly refused to be invaded by XiJinPing.

I have an idea, though:

Why not just allow unfettered emigration from places like Malaya, to the UK.

Then, allow the British to re-colonize Malaya.

And then, everyone might be happy.

The guys in the UK could enjoy a nice warm climate.

And, the immigrants to the UK, within a few decades, would get their just deserts, once they had mucked everything up in their new chosen land.

Personally I have always preferred Thailand. Better food. better females, more friendly. more fun.

Good for you.

But this forum is full of threads from Farangs who are sick of the place and constantly complaining about the Thais.

In 10 years of living in Malaysia I've never had any trouble with any of them. In fact if anything the Malays are the most gentle and polite of all the races here. The Chinese have a natural abrasiveness in their culture - you see it best in places like Hong Kong where they are in the majority and given their head to fully act out. The Malays are a moderating influence on the Chinese, and the Chinese equally give the Malays an entrepreneurial push, and the necessity to moderate the fundamentalism. The result is a better mix for both, and for expats.

If you had read the Topic, then you would have noticed that I have used the name used by my boarding-school classmate in 1964.

Don’t worry he probably also calls Bombay - Mumbai and his constant referring to ‘bar girls’ as whores shows that he has about the same respect for women, trying to get by for themselves and their families in the only way they probably can, as the Yorkshire lorry driver Peter Sutcliffe had

My father’s army service record from May 1936 - May 1939 refers to Singapore as Malaya so for McPhooey it will always be Malaya

Malaysia has some great places to visit like the Penang Hill or the Cameron Highlands but it is extremely boring in my opinion. The muslim mindset ain't too fun, believe that ! As I remember it they have decent public transportation which is nice but that's it.

From my point of view the upside is that Malaysia is quite beautiful, they have some stunning national parks and some gorgeous coastline, a lot of natural diversity and a bit wilder than Thailand in terms of the parks and forests. Also there is a bit more diversity food wise, you can get real Chinese food, alot of good Indian food and some good local food.

For me the downside is that the people though they are nice, they're not quite as joyful as the Thai people and they don't have the sense of humor that the Thai people have. They seem to be a bit weighed down by their faith, and they seem to take life a bit too seriously perhaps because of that. Secondarily I don't think there is many opportunities for a single guy, so if that's an issue it needs to be considered.

Malaya is boring. I managed 2 nights in Penang before giving up and going back to Thailand. It's more expensive and has no night life except eating out.

Food is a rip off, and even satay is overpriced.

Also, McDs charge more to eat in their shop than takeaway, something I found out the hard way ( I paid for a takeaway and ate it outside the door ).

Penang was no longer the blissful tropical island I remembered from the 70s. All the beaches were destroyed by revolting high rise hotels and jet skiis, and the dual pricing on the cable car left me gasping in disbelief at the rip off.

You'd have to pay me to live in Malaya.

No amount of money would make me want to live in Malaysia.

He's lucky if he left in 1939.

Before independence the Malay peninsula and Singapore were both ruled by Britain and there may not have been many Chinese or Indians before the 20th century, which as I understand it were imported as labour. Makes sense they were both regarded as Malaya. Singapore was basically just a big pile of mud till the British developed it as a major military base. When I was there in the 70s, most of the bases all over the island were still occupied by the British, Australians and Kiwis.

Penang was lovely in the 70s and I could have lived there then. By 2015 it was a <deleted> hole.

Some people must have visited different Malaysia. Speaking for KL

Never got woken up by prayer.

Food million times better than Thailand. Cheaper too.

Condo rentals cheaper for what you get. No chicken farm condos there.

Cleaner air. Cleaner streets.

Healthcare is actually world class and cheaper too. I bet insurance would be cheaper also

Beer at 5 quid a glass is probably the biggest deterrent for most of us.

Didn't notice KL being any cleaner than CM/BK/HH (obviously it was cleaner than Issan)

And the food wasn't any better than Thai food.

Obviously almost everywhere in the world is better than Serbia!

Sooooo, you visit Phuket, the <deleted> hole of Thailand and Bkk and claim that the entire country is the same.

Try visiting other parts of the country outside cities for a change of attitude.

Like now? Once you avoid Jakarta and Bali (the Indonesian equivalent of Bangkok and Phuket), there are thousands of islands to explore.

Lombok for starters.

What precisely is this "muslim mindset" and how exactly does it diminish your quality of life in Malaysia?

So the British Empire created Singapore?

Its tough to live in a place where the ideology mandates the oppression of women and hate for all non muslims.

Thanks for sharing the fact that religious ideologies, worshipping gods and other such hokum, rents space in your head.
