How can someone change my debit card limit without my card or app?

Featured Replies

Yesterday afternoon I got a message from SCB saying the limit on my debit card had been changed and to contact them if it wasn't me who changed it.  It was not.   So I have had to cancel the card and today must go to the bank and get a new one - at a cost, of course!

How can some unknown person change the limit I can spend on a transaction on my debit card without my knowledge?   The card is with me in my purse 24/7 and the app on my phone is also with me 24/7.   This is most worrying.

Fortunately I read the email within minutes of it being sent so was able to cancel the card before someone stole my money, but I wonder how on earth can this happen?   Comments please.

Lots of things can be done on the phone, after providing some information.

Unfortunately, that means for you that a new card might not solve the problem.

I guess it should be possible for you to find out when and how your limit was changed. Ask the bank. Was it a phone call, when, maybe from which number.

Thanks, I will ask the bank for further information when I get a new card and change the PIN.

The bank when I called them within minutes of getting their warning email said something about it being to do with Facebook - which I rarely use and certainly never buy anything from.

What other precautions do you suggest I take regarding securing my bank account?

Ditch the card and don't bother getting a new one. Can't see the point nowadays with all the other ways to pay, while cash can be had in cordless ATMs, not to mention Thai banks routinely charge just for having a bleedin debit card. I'm about to cancel mine.

There's a BIG scam going on in EU. Same (Russians?) are spreading world over?

Crooks can somehow plant a cookie and read ALL KEY STROKES. PIN codes , ph numbers, card numbers

after that. Lot of money lost....

I keep my cards locket and open just for payments. I also have low $ level warning limits for banks to Email all transactions BEFORE they approve the transfers.

My CC was hacked last winter in Thailand and /or Vietnam and charged for $ 971 in one day by crooks in Tennessee and Texas.

My bank, Chase, said "Crooks are selling CC number in underground international networks".

I didn't need to pay losses.

US cards are too easy to use; Automatic quick tap at cashiers, NO PIN codes in use etc

I checked my SCB transaction limits, when I tried to change them a one time code was required, this would be sent to a number on a drop down menu.

Following these instruction it revealed a phone number I have never used.

Time for a bank visit

Yes. Have the bank freeze the account as soon as possible. Move all the money to another account online if you have one. Some accounts can be locked when you log in to the bank.

This should be in banking.

Possibly someone you know. I agree with cancelling the card, use cardless withdrawal instead
