Foreign Driver in Fatal EV Collision with Motorbike, Drags It Over 50 Metres

The collision unfolded in Chonburi on the afternoon of November 11, when a 40 year old foreign woman, identified as Ms Ekaterina, nationality was not disclosed, driving a new, red license plated electric car collided with a Honda Scoopy motorbike, resulting in the death of a passenger and injuries to the rider. 

 

The crash occurred around 13:00 near Sirin Village on Soi Chaipornwithi 25, close to its intersection with the Motorway Frontage Road in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District.

 

According to reports, the driver of the electric car struck the motorbike with considerable force dragging the vehicle and its rider and passenger approximately 50 metres along the road. 

 

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found the car driver visibly upset and crying. The motorbike rider, Mr. Wirat Sangthong aged30, had sustained serious injuries and was given first aid, before being transported to hospital. Sadly, the female passenger on the motorbike Ms. Nitjaree Lomroen, 33 , succumbed to her injuries on-site and emergency responders were unable to save her. 
 

Local police have launched an investigation to determine the events leading up to the collision. Officers are actively reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras and interviewing witnesses to gather details.

Rubbish. So you're saying the cause of this crash was the weight of the Deepal. Righty ho.

The Deepal S07 wieghs 200kg less than an ICE BMW X5. It weighs significantly less than a Toyota Fortuna. 

Yes, an EV might weigh a bit more than its equivalent ICE version (if there is one), but no different to millions of other types of ICEVs on the road. If you're going to trot out anti EV cliche at least try and make them up to date.

Or vehicle fire from an ICEV even being reported.  Got to be at least one out there, considering the 20+X stats of them happening vs EV fires.

 

Now the weight of the car is the cause of accidents, well, EVs only of course, as heavy ICEV are never in accidents.   Cause is never the idiots driving them.

It looks like a head-on collision, or possibly left side of motorcycle hit, and the car is on the far left side of the road. So, Ghost Rider? Unless the motorcycle turned right in front of the car to enter the Sirin Village, which wouldn't surprise me. I can't see any scenario here where the car would be at fault.

She must have been pretty fast when it takes so long to stop the vehicle.

 

Problem with EVs: High acceleration, little noise. New drivers don't realize how fast they are.

.... Unless the driver just drove straight into the back of the motorcyclist (and pillion) while they were riding along slowly...

In general that's true. But the Deepal S07 is not very fast for an EV. About as fast as my petrol XC40 which no one would say is scarily fast.

In fact it is the reason I wouldn't buy one - they look great, well specced, nice interior, but just lacking in performance.

The front of the bike is embedded into the front passengers side of the car, that was head-on.

 

Nice to see the video though, whatever happened, more than likely happened at the intersection before the village. I would say the motorcycle tried to make a right turn into the road before the village.

Really?  Speed starts at anything more than 0kph.  In the mid 80s I crashed an Escort into the back of a Capri at 50mph at impact and no one was even injured.
