In a bid to foster inclusivity and equal opportunity, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and several partner organisations recently held the 10th iteration of the "Educational Opportunities for Disabled Students 2024" event. A key national event aimed at providing resources on higher education and vocational training for students living with disabilities, it aims to create inclusive learning environments and stable employment pathways.

Anukul Peedkaew, Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to improving the quality of life for disabled individuals. Central to this is the initiation of significant social changes, including increased sign language services, strengthening access to higher education, and securing employment opportunities in both public and private sectors. A tribute to His Majesty the King sees 72,000 mobility aids made readily available for distribution.

In the light of ThaiHealth's recent disclosure - that a mere 2% of Thailand’s 2.2 million disabled population possesses a bachelor's degree - the need for such initiatives is underscored. With almost 530,000 of the country's 860,000 working-age disabled citizens unemployed, efforts to uplift this marginalised group are crucial. To combat this, the Thai government has launched new "Flagship Projects" to enhance livelihoods, and support the establishment of self-sustaining communities. These projects primarily target vulnerable demographics that include both disabled and elderly citizens.

Bangkok's Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, echoed these sentiments, reiterating the city’s dedication to fostering an inclusive society. He proudly stated that over 4,000 disabled students are currently enrolled in BMA schools, and job opportunities are available across the city’s 50 district offices. The governor also highlighted the BMA’s investment in teacher training in special education and the modernisation of public facilities to meet Universal Design standards, which ensure an accessible and inclusive environment for all residents. This significant national effort reflects Thailand's commitment to creating a society that truly values and supports all its citizens.
